Good idea for wedding reception?
Ash
I want a nice wedding, but simple in some ways. I haven't decided on my wedding theme yet (I was thinking a fall theme). For my reception, I want something fun, and something people will remember. So I was thinking me and my FH would dress up as Sandy and Danny from grease, the movie and our bridesmaids and groomsmen would be the rest of the pink ladies and thunderbirds. Who couldn't love that? But the only problem is, I don't know what to do for decorations and favors and the reception. Any ideas?
Oh, and the actually wedding would still be normal. I'll be wearing a white dress and all that normal stuff, so it'll still be nice, I just want something different for the recepetion.
If you're going to answer the question, please actually read it. My WEDDING is not grease themed, the reception is. Also, it's my day not everyone elses, and I'm not doing these to try to please people.
Answer
OMG I love the woman who does exactly what she wants for her wedding reception/ the biggest party of her life! You are completely correct, it is for YOU (and your new Mr. of course;), not for your cousin so-and-so, or your co-worker from Accounting!
Anyway, If I were you (and I kind of wish I was BTW) I would pull out all the stops and do something even a little more unexpected than what's been suggested...I mean, if you're gonna do it... do it! Grow-up the pink satin jackets and sophisticate the skin-tight black pants with a mood that brings to mind the best of what "Grease" has to offer... carefree spirit, rebellious notions, and fun, fun, fun! It's all about "coming-of-age" right? ...In short, go Grease Glam, Girl!
To accomplish this it truly begins and ends with the soundtrack. And, because you've chosen one that literally everybody knows, all you need is to introduce your wedding party while playing the song "Look at Me I'm Sandra Dee" or "Grease Lightning" and everyone will be enrolled in your vintage vision! Then, to develop the concept further, I'd focus on the color palette. I'd stick to the familiar "Pink Lady" black, white, and yes, pink, but for that super chic splash of glam I'd spice it up by using a few surprisingly glamorous decor elements and a little shimmer and shine!
Try skinny black vases with ultra tall white ostrich feathers in the place of flowers- and be sure to add a little bling with a few pink rhinestones or crystals glued onto the feathers or added to the vase as an embellishment. Once you start with such a streamlined focus element it's super simple to carry the theme throughout the reception by calling to mind Old Hollywood. Just Google "50's Glam" or think chandeliers (mini ones borrowed from your local flower shop will do the trick), feather fascinators (check out our DIY section for pics), luxurious fabrics, and a little bit of bubbly!
For the Bridesmaids try either black, white, or pink vintage (or vintage style) dresses and showcase yourself in a 50's style Audrey-esque black and white floral ensemble (check out the link below). Your man could sport a skinny tie, black shades, and vintage kicks, foregoing the "rolled up cigarette pack in the sleeve" for some sexy "I just rolled up in my tricked-out T-Bird" style. Then round out the evening with some cosmopolitan 50's romance by playing a few classic love songs from the era, but do end with a "Grease" classic. Just don't run out and leave that embroidered pink "Bride" jacket hanging on the back of your chair at the end of the night!
Thanks for the fun question- hope this helps!
