Bridal Gown Rentals around MD/DC/VA??

Q. HELP!! I really don't want to spend 2+ grands for a wedding gown that I will not wear again...

Where can I find a good bridal gown rental place around the MD/DC/VA area?

Thanks!

Answer
Great idea! You know honestly ebay has some REALLY cheap gowns. I know a girl who got one from china on ebay for almost nothing. The shipping was the biggest hassel ($100). Also if you do end up buying ask for LAST SEASON"S stalk. WAY CHEAPER. Some of those gowns would cost less then renting and are definatly great looking!!!!! ALso there are stores that sell used dresses. Usually the dress has to be only 3 years old and they are reasonably priced.

Good luck on dress shopping!

$11,000 Budget for my wedding in October... PLEASE HELP?

Any help is good. I am getting married in Fredericksburg, VA hopefully in October of this year. I am super stressed out. Can't find a venue that is in my price range... I do not know what to do.
please help me!

Answer
First, determine how many guests in your wedding.

And consider this website:

www.costofwedding.com

It's a good tool which really helps with maintaining your focus/budget with your wedding. It gives you a general ball park figure, then you can start shaving costs as you go over each category. This also helps with not forgetting any details too.

INVITATIONS:
Create your own wedding invitations. If you have a Michaels Craft store nearby, this is a great opportunity to check out their clearance section. They have pretty good create your own wedding invitations by BRIDAL MAGAZINE on sale (just saw them yesterday....they sell fast when it's on clearance!) Also consider creating your own "save the date" cards for out of town guests too (send out in March for October).

Also check out (if you want to make your own):
www.paper-source.com

FLOWERS (You can do well with a budget of up to $1,500.00)
Believe it or not, check out Costco's website, under flowers and wedding flowers. They actually have suppliers that create bridal party flowers at a very reasonable price, and very nice too (if you like very simple details such as an all rose bouquet).

Check out Costco for invitations too. Nice selection and well priced too (My daughter in law ordered theirs, and I was pleasantly pleased....it was only 100.00 for invitations and reply cards, etc...)

Shave costs by finding a restaurant or hotel w/banquet rooms with a ceremony site. (it may cost a little more that if you find a site. Restaurants and hotels have everything including staff). It'll spare you alot of headaches with locating a catering; rental of linens and tables & chairs, etc.....) You'll do good if you're able to find a restaurant/hotel that offers meals up to $65.00 per person ($6,500.00)

CAKES (Sometimes the restaurant or hotel provides that at a reasonable amount)

FAVORS: (100.00 to 250.00 [1.00 to 2.50 per person])

So far, that's approximately 8,350.00

Other factors:
Brides gown (Check out David's Bridal or even Target on line....Issac Mizrahi's line. Currently on sale, and a great price of only $100.00. My daughter in law got her dress there [on line] and it looked no different then someone who paid 1,500.00).

Bridesmaid dresses & shoes (Bridesmaids may pay for their own)
(Go to outlets for great bridesmaid dresses....i.e.: Coldwater Creek
had a variety of dresses that were perfect for bridesmaid dresses
for under $50.00, and they were made of silk or silk chiffon)

Tux rental (for groom & groomsmen)
(Optional: Transportation, i.e.: Limo., may not be necessary)

Hotel Room for (day before and after wedding)

Hope this gives you a little guidance/direction.

Wedding dresses?

Where can I find wedding dresses for $2000 or less and what is your guys' opinions I don't know where to look where I can just browse on the internet without putting down a date for the wedding, Me and my man were talking about a wedding in 4 1/2 years.

Answer
Go to your local bridal shop and ask to see the "sale" or "off-the-rack" dresses. Theses dresses are usually one season old and are discounted majorly. The reason they are discounted is because you are buying the dress that you try on, you are not ordering it. Do not go to David's Bridal, their dresses are very poor quality

I got my dress for $414.00. It retails or $750

Answer
Davids bridal has a wide variety of dresses, for pretty cheap (depending on what your looking for) Also, they have specials ALL the time. Maybe check out they're $99 sale. Usually the dresses they have for $99 are the really small (like yours would be) or really really bid. Its an option to check out!

Also, try ebay. I see dresses on there all the time for under $200, and in every size you could think of!!

Good luck and Congrats on getting married!!!

where can I buy a wedding gown for under $200?

cjohnson51

I Live in CT, the Danbury area and I am looking to spend no more than $200 on a wedding gown. I can't seem to find any stores that I can view the dresses and prices online, yet physically walk into the store so I can try it on. Please help!!!!

Answer
You can find a good deal on Craigslist on a David's Bridal dress, then go into the store to try it on. Lots of people post the item numbers, etc, to make it easy for you to do that.

Good luck on your wedding!

Help finding a perfect wedding dress?

Anna

I'm trying to find a wedding dress with long lace sleeves. I really like these two:

http://www.dreambridaldress.com/wedding-dress-with-sleeves/sleeve013.html
http://www.eastbridal.com/wedding-dress-style/long-sleeves-wedding-dress/plus-size-a-line-strapless-neckline-chapel-train-off-the-shoulder-lace-sleeves-white-wedding-dress-sgwd0005.html

but both those companies don't seem reputable. And other more well known companies just seem to have lace jacket style coverups for older brides. I know david's bridal will attach long lace sleeves to any sleeveless dress, but the pictures of their sleeves didn't look very good.

I'm 5'10'' and a size 14. So a little overweight, but I don't really need a huge cover up dress. I just have a scar on my upper arm from a skiing accident that I'd be more comfortable if it was covered up. And I think those two dresses look classy, yet sexy.

Thanks!
I was concerned about those companies because reviews I found said that the dress wouldn't arrive, or would be low quality.
Those Casablanca dresses look really nice! There's a retailer about 30 miles from me, I'll definitely go try them on. I couldn't ever find the brand name on the sites I was looking at. Thanks!

Answer
You write: Help finding a perfect wedding dress?

Go actually try on gowns, please! The only way to find the perfect dress? Go try on gowns. That is the only way to tell which is the most flattering to your individual body type.

This is a major purchase. Don't order online. Actually go try on dresses. See the quality with your own eyes before purchasing.

If you are a mature bride, you can consider evening gowns and mother-of-bride gowns too. Often, a mature bride will prefer a more sophisticated look.

I have chosen to buy my wedding dress online?

I'm curious as to what type of dress would look good on my body:

Answer
Go to a store and try some on, even if you don't plan to buy one there. You might find out you like a silhouette you didn't expect to like. Plus, wedding dresses run really small. When I was shopping for my dress, I wore a size six, but all the dresses that fit were a size 10.

If I had to guess, though, I think a mermaid or an a-line with lace sleeves would look gorgeous.

Where can I find a plus-sized prom dress like this? (Examples included)?

MarileeJoi

Up for a challenge? ;) I can't find a dress like this anywhere.
I need a cute plus sized dress, I would like it to be long and puffy, (to look pretty and to keep from looking lumpy) but i'm flexible on the design as long as it's not a straight flow one. Most colors work, I have fair skin, brown hair and hazel eyes, so whatever goes with that is ok.
The main thing I need is one where the neckline doesn't go too much lower than the collar bone and where the sleeves go about halfway down to my elbows.
(I have examples at the bottom)
I'm not self conscious, I just don't feel comfortable wearing a dress with a low neckline or one that has very short/no sleeves, I'm not sure why.
I'm not the richest girl though so I need the dress to be around $200. :/

Any help would be really appreciated, I can't find anything right now and I might just not be able to go. :( I'm not even sure a dress like this exists. I really want to go, but I want to wear a pretty dress I feel good in like all the skinny girls, is that too much to ask?
THANK YOU FOR READING :)

Example Dresses:
Neckline/ bodice like this one: http://www.vuhera.com/party-dresses/homecoming-dress-with-sequin-cap-sleeve-bodice-and-full-tulle-skirt-p-6211.html
Sleeves like this one:http://www.ericdress.com/product/Fashion-Beading-Short-Sleeves-A-Line-Floor-Length-Prom-Dress-10872342.html
Skirt similar to this one (but i'm flexible on this): http://es.aliexpress.com/item/Free-shipping-2013-hot-sale-mint-green-quinceanera-dress-strapless-sequins-organza-ball-gowns-homecoming-dress/1096160420.html

Prom Dress Color Options?

Claire

I have light brown (practically dirty blonde) hair and light brown caramel-like almost gold eyes. I'm trying to find a prom dress that will bring out my eyes/go with my hair? I was thinking a royal blue..but I could be way off! Thank you!

Answer
Royal blue is all wrong, btws honey I'm a wedding dress designer and royal blue is all wrong.! I've worked with all types of hair eye, tall skinny short plus size. And if your tallish skinny and have long or medium hair I would go with either pink or red.and if not dark brown Long dresses are best with a sparkly head peice and non too sparkly earrings with a locket golden or silver color. As for red or pink I would suggest little bit of sparkly necklace and head peice with diamond stun medium sized earrings.hope I helped girl have a great prom and have fun!!! But not too much fun lol!

Wedding Color Coordination. Help!?

lilpatchee

I am in a dilemma now. My wedding dinner is in 6 weeks time. I will be walking in with an off-white bridal gown, and then at some point of time, I will change into an evening gown. The issue is I am undecided which color to choose for my evening gown - fuschia or lavender. What dress colors should my bridesmaids wear if I choose either of the gowns?

By the way, my table setting colors are cream and peach. My invitation cards are in cream color. How should I coordinate the colors?

Answer
I would say, incorporate as much color as you can, with peaches, coral, pinks, and yellow, preferably with flowers; try putting the bridesmaids in pink or coral â but with this little time, youâll have to take what you can find off the rack because you donât have time to order. They really should have had their dresses already. Then, you could wear the fuschia dress and make a statement without totally clashing with your wedding. Peach can be hard to work with, though. Good luck, and congratulations!

Drycleaning a wedding dress?

Kat

Please tell me what experiences you have each had with drycleaning your wedding gown, before or after the wedding. What did it cost?

I was just at David's Bridal last night with my white A line with chapel train wedding dress that I bought off the rack at another David's location. Since it is off the rack, it does not look as clean as I think it should be...since people tried it on in the store.

I talked to their alterations department. They offer a spot cleaning service, but not dry cleaning. They told me if I feel it needs to be cleaned more than just a few spots, to get it dry cleaned elsewhere before getting the alterations done at David's Bridal. My wedding is in April, 2008...David's Bridal told me I could go ahead and get the cleaning done now, and alterations 3 months before the wedding.
Then they will press the gown, and it will be done.

Any experience with similar situations? How much did it cost?
Once again, I need to explain something to Sniffydogs because he/she is immediately negative to one of my questions.

My gown cost $99. Is that discounted enough for you? It fits wonderfully, with the right shoes it will not need hemmed, just needs cleaned, sleeves added and bustled.

I'm marrying on a budget, and still keeping it classy, courteous to my guests and fun. I don't know what your issue is, but not everyone has $25,000+ to spend on a wedding. It is a real shame to throw yourself into debt over one day...not a good way to start a relationship.

Answer
Have them stop clean it first! If it's not clean enough, through a freaken fit for them to redo it. Mine is the same way although I paid $600 for mine it was 50% off and they are suppose to clean all rack purchase perfect!!
I would make them do it first and see how it looks- it will cost $75-$100 to have it dry cleaned.

David's gave me 100% it would be cleaned correctly. Let them do it their way first which shouldn't cost you a dime and then get more pushy if it's still dirty.

Camo Wedding?

sammy_jo82

My husband to be is really into hunting, so we are having black tuxs andbridesmaids gown with camo vests and sashes...i need pictures of camo accesories for teh wedding, and places to get them from in middle tennessee such as jackson or nashville...what color bouquets, decor and stuff?
TO THOSE OUT THERE CRITICIZING ME, THIS IS MY WEDDING IF YOU DONT LIKE MY IDEA THEN DONT READ IT....IM TRYING TO HAVE AN ELEGANT WEDDING, NOT A TRAHSY ONE LIKE YALLS WERE OR ARE GOING TO BE~
tHE BRIDESMAIDS ARE WEARING CAMO SASHES AND THE GROOMSMEN ARE WEARING TEH VESTS IDIOTS...GOSH PPL THESE DAYS AND IT WILL ALL BE TASTEFULY DONE!

Answer
sweetie its different and people always take a stab at something out of the ordinary, don't lower yourself to their level by yelling back or even answering their silliness. let it go! you know you are going to love your day and thats what counts!
i think that kandy kay has given you a pretty good answer, complete with sites for you look at and you should probably give her best answer.
as for bouquets, it depends entirely on your colors, i know you said the bridesmaids gowns will have camo sashes, but what color are the gowns themselves? maybe i missed that bit in your question. personally i would go with gerbera daisies which have wonderful colors mixed in with mums/carnations which are relatively inexpensive so you can have a very lush bouquet and if you purchase white mums/carnations you can very easily tint them to the color you want.
i would do mums for the men's boutonnieres and any corsages you need for your mothers and other special guests.
for your reception you could have white table linen with a runner down the center of each table in your wedding colors. if you wanted to go for a bit of 'hunting lodge' look, then you could do the runners in browns and greens and for the centerpieces you can do kissing balls, and again if you use mums, and make them yourself they would be quite inexpensive to do, and they are very pretty centerpieces. you could do the kissing balls in either fresh flowers or silks, in bt. oranges, deep reds, the colors of the forest in autumn when i am assuming a lot of hunting is done! [not poking fun at anyone/i dont hunt so i haven't a clue] autumn colors are so vibrant and spectacular that your reception can't help but be beautiful!
whatever you choose i wish you the perfect wedding!

p.s. kissing balls are dead easy to make yourself, so if you are thinking of those consider doing your own! you'll save quite a bit of money that you could spend on something else!

How do I prevent a tacky wedding?

MayFlowers

With chemo bankrupting me a bit ago, I only us want to spend about $4000 on my wedding. (It's my fiance and I financing it, and we are in our 30's) I have always dreamed of eloping- to me it seems so much more romantic, and I have never wanted to walk down the aisle in a big white frock of a gown. I would feel like I was on stage in a play. However, now that the time has come, I do want to have family and close friends there. I would consider myself a hippie born many years too late as I would prefer to get married outdoors in a breezy dress. Is there anyway to pull off something casual like this without looking tacky? There's a fine line between cool and tacky or cheap. Any ideas, or am I doomed?

Answer
Love you story. Congratulations!! I will let you know how to avoid a tacky wedding.

-Avoid orange self tanners, Gross
-Avoid long cathedral lenght dresses, princess dresses, pooffy sleeves and pick-up style dresses are dated, tacky and in horrible taste.
-Avoid the "princess" cinderalla theme altogether. Grown women have no bussiness having emasculating ridiculous themes on their wedding.
-Do not wear a tiara unles syou are five years old or the queen of England.
-Long veils are a thig of the past.
-Cake toppers (yes! those horrible dolls on top of the cake) they are horribly tacky and PASSE. Whaetver you do, do not have voodoo dolls on your wedding cake.
-Please, I beg you, do not use those corny wedding bells, They are a waste of money and it's not 1960 anymore. No one ever takes tham or ring them, so save your money. Tacky, tacky.
-Skip those tacky goldfish centerpieces. No one wants dead animals on ytheur reception.
-All brides, be aware that noone uses those horrible disposable cameras with bridal themes anymore. Digital baby!
-The garter toss is in bad taste and horribly tacky. Please do not do this.
-An overbloated wedding party is in poor taste. More than 4 bridemaids is TOO much already
-Limos are a thing of the past (and the eighties)
-Flower girls and page boys are a dissapearing trend, not tacky per se, but modern brides skip this so called tradition.
-NO UNITY CANDLE... you don't have to have that horrible looking useless thing. yikes
-For the love of Pete, do noy have one of those terrible looking feather pens with matching guest book. There are so many out-of-the boz alternatives.
-Skip the "never seen before" candied jordan almonds and the stupid tulle circles... puag!
-Please, do not ask their guest to pay for their own meal. Have the weddin that you can afford, but entretain yoru guests in a gracious manner.

ANT THE TACKIEST OF ALL

Money dances, money purses, wishing wells and any other scam to cash things out of your guest are in horrible taste and should be avoided. And whatever you do, do not write on aper or worse, your invitation, registry information or cash request... AWFULLY tacky.

Well, I think that I covered all. Good luck and congratulations

For lovely dresses on a budget, David's Bridal has a $99.00 gown sale. i got mine there is is gorgeous for my destination wedding:

www.davidsbridal.com

Unexpensive, exquisite invitations (manufacturer)

www.lcipaper.com

Flowers and Cake

Go to a suppermarket floris! Stop and Shop, Giant etc. have trained florist and you do not have to pay the overhead costs.
Supermarket bakeries have a catalog of wedding desings that have nothing to envy those of professional bakers. Unexpensive alternative that looks the part and no one will know.

To have a budget-friendly wedding, keep your guest list SHORT. Rule of thumb is to invite inmediate family memmebrs and close friends only. basically, you Christmas card list. If you haven't seen/talked to one person in one year, then you shouldn't invite them. Acquantainces, neighbors and co-workers should be avoided to keep things simple and small and under control.

You are nor doomed! You can do this! Good luck!

Wedding help please!?

First

Me and my fiance are planning on getting married soon. I ordered our rings yesterday. Anytime I have to get up in front of people I turned cherry red and get very embarrassed. I was wanting to try to have a very small church wedding and I have very little money. I really need some help with some questions?

1. Any ideas so I won't turn cherry red?
2. Anything to help me stop being so nervous and shakey?
3. How much does a small wedding usually cost?
4. What are all of the vows during the wedding and any sites where I can look at some of them?
5. What are the basic things needed for a small wedding?

Answer
1.) I do not know how to stop from turning red, but during times of expected anxiety I have learned that doing breathing exercises is a very effective way to stay calm. Really. Moments prior to walking down the aisle, take a deep, slow breath through your nose and exhale, slowly through your mouth. Do this for the moments prior to your aisle entrance. Remember, do this slowly, so give your self time. Rushing will cause you to get light headed. Stay in control and concentrate on the breathing. The reason this works is because it brings extra oxygen into the blood stream and the brain, causing a calming effect and acute awareness.

2) refer to #1 as this will also help your nerves/shaking.

3) Wedding costs are subjective. You could do a low budget wedding and just pay the church fees, wear a $99.00 David's Bridal gown, and have a pot luck barbecue in your back yard. Or, you could have a grand reception for the price of a luxury car. Know this: you can work with ANY budget.

4) I am sure if you do a google search on "wedding vows" you can come up with many, many ideas. Because you get nervous in front of people, it may be a good idea for your officiant or clergy member to recite your vows and you repeat after him. This way your vows will be heard by the witnesses and you can just repeat them without having a loss for words.

5) Basic things for a small wedding: Dress, your flowers, one attendant with flowers for you. Tux or suit, a bootineer, a best man with bootineer for him. Invitations. A place for a reception (a park, someones yard or house), food (substantial appetizers), refreshments (keg beer and or wine, juice, soda and ice water) cake (Walmart/Super market). You can get decent plastic plates and napkins at the dollar store or a wholesale place on line or a warehouse shopping club.

Getting married need not cost thousands upon thousand of dollars. I have had huge parties that were wedding reception quality for only $500.00.

help with low budget for our beautiful wedding?

Beata D

Well, my fiance and I are getting married at the Orcutt Ranch in Westhills about 20 minutes from Los Angeles and are looking for some help.
We are on a tight budget (want to do dinner for around $10 per person) and will have around 150 guests that are travelling from all over.
I know this might seem cheap but we are trying to do our best to still have a beautiful wedding but not start our lives together with all this wedding debt like so many people do.
I totally believe this is possible.
I am not sure if we could find a catering company that would provide food for that low? Or a restaurant?
We were thinking of finding a restaurant that would be able to provide all that food, mostly with a chicken entree but we will also offer a vegan option as well for just a few people (the vegan option we have covered)
Then we were thinking of renting the large buffet containers that keep the food warm and hire 5 people to set up the food, serve it as a buffet style and clean up afterwards.

We have a company we can rent tables and chair from for cheap.

We did the invitations ourselves since my fiance is a comic book artist and made the most original and amazing invites.

One of our friends has bakes wedding cakes in the past and is doing our cake so that will save us a lot.

We have about 5 people coming that are professional photographers and who will take photos for us.

We just need to cover the food really and find an officiant that isn't $500.

Since I am a fashion designer, I am making the bridesmaid dresses.

My parents are buying my dress.

The bar has to be rented from their vendor.

The cake is one large cake and then smaller versions of the cake below it so we do not need the cake to be cut for all our guests. We would like the staff we hire to do this as well, just walk around and hand out the little cakes to everyone.

We really want to have an amazing day with our friends and family without having to spend a huge amount. I know there are many people out there in the same boat and I would appreciate any help.

We also need plates, cutlery and glasses, we will more likely do the elegant plastic look so we can throw them out after and not have to wash them.

We are basically open to any suggestions and advice. We know it is possible. We have a lot of things covered but really need to figure out the best option for food. We do want a dinner, not just appetizers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Answer
First, you need to get the cost of what it would be to rent the buffet containers and also to hire 5 people to set up, serve, and clean up. From a quick look online, I see that most warmer rentals can go for $25/piece and up. If you use only 3, you're price could be nearly $100. You can probably figure that most servers will run around $10/hour. At 5 servers for 3 hours, you're spending $150. Total cost- $250

At dontdodishes.com, plastic plates are $100 to fit your party of 150, but you will need two plates per person (one for food and one for the cake), so you're looking at $200. Flatware will cost you nearly $150 for fork, knife, spoon @2/person..just in case. And $30 for glasses @ 1/person. Plus misc. pieces for serving the food. Total cost - $400

You could use The Ranch Catering Company, as they are only 30 minutes away. They have "family meals" for less than $10/piece. Maybe you could talk them into catering your event for that price. Also, you could ask them if you could "rent" tableware from them for a flat fee. Say maybe $200? And if it's served buffet style, you will not need as many servers. Maybe 2-3. If you are paying a gratuity fee, this should go to pay the servers. They may have a delivery charge.

Total cost $200, and you have quality plates and flatware to eat with. This saves $450 as well as not having to clean and return buffet warmers, handle LARGE quantities of trash, or worry about food serving sizes. PLUS, 5% of The Ranch food fee goes to children through World Vision.

I know this sounds crazy, you should ask the company to "sponsor" your wedding..or at least partially, and in return you can give them advertisement at your wedding. Nothing tacky. You could simply say, "Ladies and Gentleman, we would like to bring your attention to the fact that The Ranch has catered or event today. We are telling you this, because we are proud to have aided them in fighting world hunger. 5% of every sale goes to the children of World Vision. Please help us in this quest by using The Ranch for all your catering needs. Big round of applause for all their charitable work!"

At least OFFER this to the business. You may be surprised!

When you're dealing with the open bar at your wedding location, make sure to note if there are any guests under 21. There's no reason to pay bar the same bar prices for those people. Barter for a reduced amount. Also, I see that they offer a "value package" that serves beer and wine. Go with this over liquor. It saves you tons of $$ and keeps guests from getting too carried away! See if the bar has stemware for use. They may charge a fee, but it's typically cheaper than renting it.

OH! And as for the officiant... do you have someone in your life that has made a big impact on you two, as a couple? Someone who introduced you? A favorite relative? Why not have THEM as your officiant? They can legally perform your ceremony if they become an ordained minister! They can do this for free at Themonastery.org. Some places charge, so beware. Not only does it save you $500, but it's very unique. You can even act like the officiant didn't show up on your wedding day, and ask the crowd if anyone can marry you two. Your officiant can then take over..to the applause of the wedding guests. It's memorable, at least!! :)

Total cost saved for your event? $1000 up

Good luck!

Wedding Gown???? Online Shopping?

Muah!!!

I am currently planning my wedding for Oct of 2011. We are on a tight budget, as we have 2 children & I am a stay @ home mom. I have been looking for bridal gowns with a $1000 budget for the dress. But i just cant seem to find anything within my price range that I fall in love with. I was looking online & it seems that there are quite a few websites that offer to custom make a dress to your size at a very low price. ( Most of the dress on these websites go for $200- $300). I like the prices, & the picture of the dresses but I need to know a little more. Anyone purchase a dress online, please let me know what you thought. Im loosing sleep over this!!!!

Here are some links to these websites:

Answer
Feel free to email me if you need any help planning your wedding:)

To be honest, many online Bridal Clothing stores aren't as good as they look. The dresses are usually just *too* cheap quality!
The websites that you've shown, however, don't seem half bad. If you're looking to buy a pretty nice, but still cheap, gown, you'll probably want to stick to those sites.

Here are some other dresses that you may want to consider:

Wedding gown designers and prices?

shimerings

Could anyone give me a list of the most famous wedding gown designers like Demetrios, Eve of Milady, Eden, Allure, Alfed Sung ect. along with an average price per gown or price range so I can get an idea about the cost?

Answer
Check out Maggie Sottero. When I was shopping for a wedding gown, I didn't notice that much of a difference between price and designer. You should make an appointment with a bridal salon to try on some dresses. I paid just under $500 for my Maggie gown before alterations, etc.. I looked at other dresses and they were very close. I looked at Alfred Sung. The gown I bought though is the one that I wanted before I came in and tried it on. I just fell in love with it.

www.caradonnabridal.com

This site has a variety of beautiful wedding dresses.

edit: Shop the classifieds. It's all over the place for wedding gowns. How picky are you? You could possibly find one on sale or in clearance. I looked but didn't find one in my size that I liked. Keep in mind alterations for the gown. That's a big factor. My dress cost me about $300 in alterations.

Inexpensive Wedding Ideas?

Heidi

Anyone have any cheap wedding ideas? flowers? food? decorations?

I am trying to keep the wedding as inexpensive as possible because we don't have a lot of money and we do not have help from our family either (on a money point of view). I was thinking instead of like a full course meal maybe more of like a buffet style with cheaper foods? Any food ideas?

Answer
In general, non-traditional wedding days are cheaper (Friday night, Sunday afternoon), and non-traditional times (morning, early afternoon, late night) are easier on your catering budget since you don't have to provide a full meal. Limiting the guest list to immediate family and close friends will save you tons. Try to avoid anything that's specifically for weddings, as it will be 2-3 times the normal cost. Enlist family and friends' help and services as much as possible, or network through them to get discounts.

Catering: Hors d'oeuvres, finger food, or an afternoon tea is much less expensive than providing a full meal, but then you shouldn't time your reception to be during lunch or dinner. Brunches and buffets are the next cheapest options, and a full course sit-down meal is the most expensive route. If you have very generous and ambitious friends/relatives and under 75 guests, you could possibly cater it yourself (some basic food items can be purchased in bulk at places like Sam's Club). You could also do a pot-luck or a dessert reception and have your friends and relatives make something. The cheapest route is just cake and punch but it comes off as cheap.

As far as cheap food ideas, meat is usually the most expensive part of a meal, so you want to limit that as much as possible. Chicken or fish is generally cheaper than beef/ steak. Cutting it up in something like chicken fettucine alfredo is cheaper than just serving a big hunk of it. Supplementing the meat dish with simpler things like fruits (apples, grapes, strawberries, pineapples), vegetables (mashed potatoes, green beans), and breads/grains (rolls, rice) will seems like a lot of food but shouldn't be that expensive. Have the cake be your only dessert. Call several caterers and restaurants which do catering to get price estimates on various dishes and decide from there.

Invitations and Programs: There are several online sites that you can order invitations from for cheap. Otherwise, you can buy inexpensive ones that you print yourself from Michaels or Target. Or if you feel very ambitious, you can make them completely from scratch, using your printer and nice cardstock from a craft store.

Wedding dress: Buy it on sale in the fall/ off-season or get it secondhand. There are several websites for brides selling their dresses (make sure you try on the same style in a store though and know your size/ measurments). Or avoid the traditional "wedding dress" completely and find a nice white dress at a department store (Nordstrom's, J Crew, Target). If you decide to get it at bridal salon, call around to compare prices of the dresses you like. I got my dress for $450 cheaper by doing that.

Bridesmaid's Dresses: Ebay and Craigslist! Instead of matching dresses, you could just specify a color and designer and let them find one they like at a price they can afford. (i.e. "Apple Red" at David's Bridal)

Groomsmen's attire: Tux rentals are expensive, but usually not on your tab. You could have them wear their nicest black suit, or some matching slacks with a white button-down shirt. But if you do have the groomsmen rent tuxes, usually then the groom's rental is free.

Ceremony site: If you are a member of a local congregation, the church may be "free" with a donation and can usually accommodate the reception as well. Otherwise, you could have it somewhere less traditional and it may be cheaper. Ideas: Historic mansions/ old buildings, gardens, parks, museums, hotels, farms, a friend's backyard, bed and breakfasts... Famous, beautiful churches and country clubs would probably be the most expensive.

Ceremony "props"- unity candles, ringbearer pillow, flowergirl basket, guest book, pew/aisle decor, etc: Do it yourself, find similar things not targeted for weddings (normal candles instead of "wedding unity candles"), or get them at a discount or craft store (WalMart, JoAnn Fabrics).

Flowers- Rather than having them professionally done, buy the flowers wholesale and arrange them yourself or have a crafty friend do it. Limiting the number of flowers in the reception decor will reduce the cost a lot (like having a single bloom in a vase instead of a bouquet, using candles and other decorations, etc). Local/seasonal blooms are cheaper, possibly free if you know avid gardeners. I hate to say it since many people disagree, but I think fake flowers are tacky.

Photographer: Try to find a talented amateurs or someone just starting out. You could ask at the photography dept. at a local college for recommendations, search craigslist, etc. If you go with a professional, they usually offer cheaper packages that are just a certain number of hours instead of the whole day.

Reception Venue: It's smart to have the ceremony and reception at the same place, so you only have to pay 1 fee. If you have it somewhere separate, look for nontraditional venues (see above).

Wedding Cake: You can get inexpensive cakes at grocery stores or Sam's Club. If you knew a talented cook/baker, they might be willing to do it for cost- it's not impossible to make a tiered cake with simple decorations (toss on a few flower petals or a ribbon).

Wedding Dress Colour?

Mandy

I always thought I would get married in white/ivory, but the other day I went and tried on some wedding dresses. I didn't know where to start so the nice lady in the shop picked a load out for me. I tried them all on and it turns out that because of my skin tone, the 'gold' colour dresses suit me the most. They are from the Ellis Bridal range and to be honest I would call it more champagne than gold, it's not like it's miles away from the traditional white and ivory colours. However, when I asked my fiancé what type of dress he liked, he said he didn't want me in anything other than white/ivory. He also described the style of dress I had originally been looking at until I fell in love with this one ( http://www.google.co.uk/images?hl=en&q=ellis+bridal+11224&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&biw=1366&bih=667 ) which is no where near what he described! Now, I know that the dress is my choice and everything, but I want to know if anybody chose a different type of dress to what their partners wanted and how they reacted to it? Do you think he will just be blown away by how pretty I look (hopefully!!!??) and not worry about the colour and style? Or do you think he'll be disappointed by me not taking his likes into consideration? I have the dream guy - he has SO much input on this wedding, a lot different to the majority of others by the sounds of it! And basically, I want to make the most of that and not disappoint!!! :-/

Answer
I have a feeling you're going to get a lot of the same answers to this one "It's all about you, the groom doesn't care..." but I have a groom who cares and has very particular taste. His input matters to me so we shopped together and he liked almost nothing. While I'm sure if I chose something he didn't like he would keep his mouth shut, I would be able to tell he doesn't love it and that would bother me. I actually have my dress now, bought it a few weeks ago, and I didn't fall in love with it in the store, but he did, and that was the selling point that won me over. I really liked it, it fit me like a glove and I looked lovely, the price was right, but it wasn't what I had imagined for me. But we bought it with the idea I would wear it if I fell in love with it, and if not, we would sell it. Well, I fell in love with it! But, it's still far from my wedding dress vision and I still want that dress, so i'm actually making two dresses which I will wear on the day as well. Our wedding day is 24 hours, I don't see why it can't include a few dress changes :P Ultimately, he gets his dress, I get my dress (x3) and everyone is happy.

I don't think you should completely forget your groom. I think you should want him to like the dress as well and not ignore his wishes. But, the decision does rest with you in the end. If champagne flatters your skin tone, do consider how your fiance feels about this, but in the end, go after what you want. But, I imagine what you want includes a combination of pleasing him and yourself, which I think is possible. The whole process might be easier if you shop together, actually. Get a better idea of what your groom wants and maybe if he sees champagne on you he might just change his mind!

Good luck

ETA: Oh-I forgot to look at your link! Lovely gown! If that's the colour you're after in the images, does really look more like ivory to me. Seems like a design that would be popular with a male audience too, not too frilly or anything, so hopefully your fiance likes it :)

Anyone know if you can rent a wedding dress in the SF bay area? ?

NathansMom

I don't see the point in paying hundreds or thousands of dollars on something I will only wear for a few hours.

Answer
Right, I haven't heard of any place to rent gowns (although I don't know why not -- if guys can rent tuxes!!)...but there are plenty of places to get them for less. David's Bridal often has $99 dress sales for pretty gorgeous dresses. You could also check Craigslist or Ebay or local thrift shops for used dresses. After all, people just use them once, so they're almost new!

Answer
Since your flower girls will be wearing different dresses, why don't you allow your MOH and two bridesmaids to wear different dresses? Ones which would look ravishing on each of them? That is what I chose to do for mine. Everyone has different body types and different necklines can look better or worse on each person. The other option is putting your MOH in a dress like the number 7, where it is more of an a-line which mirrors your dress and the other two girls in a second dress.

Also, in order to pick the dresses you like best think of how formal or informal the event will be. Some fabrics look 'richer' than others giving an air of formality.

# 1 in my opinion is blah. nothing too special.
#2 is okay, but the fabric won't look as dressy as some of the others you chose.
#3 is cute, modern and young. The jersey dresses it down but the charmuse gives it a dressier feeling. Love it.
#4 cute, a bit modern with the bubble hem. Would your mom feel comfortable wearing a strapless gown?
#5 I love this, my MOH is wearing this dress. But, it does show every flaw in the tummy and hip area, so make sure they girls look good in this dress!
#6 cute, classic. Satin will make this gown more dressy and formal. Mirrors your silhouette.
#7My mom is wearing this dress (granted she is a size 2) but it looks fabulous on, plus there are little belaro's which you can match with it.

Hope that is helpful!

Question about wedding colors and bridesmaids dresses?

phatchick1

I'm getting married in February of next year and my wedding colors are lavender and mint green. I'm having four bridesmaids and I was wondering how I should incorporate the wedding colors into the bridesmaids dresses. I wanted to let my bridesmaids be able to choose their own dresses, I would just tell them what color they had to be. But I don't know if maybe I should pick two styles, one in lavender and one in mint green, and have two girls wear the same dress and the same color, or just pick one color and have the girls pick what style they want. Please help! :-)
I'm not going to have a MOH, they're all Bridesmaids.

Answer
Always have your BM in the same color dresses an different styles are optional. With these colors I would go with one color as base and accent with the other color. Ex. lavender dresses with mint hair accessories. Just be very careful with these colors so the wedding will come off classy. I would suggest using a neutral color for your base color, silver, creme or ivory and use the lavender and mint to accent. Hope all goes well.
