My fiancé and I are getting married in 2013. We have both been married before & have 3 teenage daughters. I would love to have a traditional long wedding gown with veil etc - would this be acceptable?

Answer
YES UP TO YOU WELL DONE

When is the time to look for your wedding gown?

Mrs.Marcru

I am getting married 1-19-2013, and I was wondering what was the best time I should go looking for a gown? I heard it can take up to a few months to get it in after alterations, so any ideas?

Answer
OMG I have the same wedding day as you! Go us! lol!

I went browsing at some shops last weekend with my mum. I went to go "look" at dresses and help me figure out what I like. But guess what? I ended up putting a deposit down on the 2nd dress I tried on! Thanks to my mum - she's the one who convinced me. My dress won't be ready until June/July.
I was afraid that I've rushed things but the dress is perfect and I got it at an amazing discount. My mum is a professional seamstress (but I don't want her to make my dress 'cuz we'd just argue), so if it needs to be altered after I get my dress I know I'll be ok.

But if I didn't buy a dress then I'd say you can start looking now to see what you like. But don't buy anything until much later in the year. Keep in mind it can take a few months to get the dress just perfect.

Good luck!

I have a a nice pair of Stacy Addams light brown dress shoe and I was wondering what type pf pant would go with it? Also, a dark brown shoe from Bass.

Answer
Khakis are a safe bet. Although they're not too dressy.

I've always heard as a rule of thumb that you're NEVER supposed to wear shoes that are a lighter color than your pants.

Hope this helps.

how to match a corsage with my dates dress?

Hobocamp

Is there a certain rule for colors of dresses/shoes that my date is wearing- and the color that the corsage needs to be? (at HOMECOMING) Like for a black dress, blue dress, etc... I think my date has a black dress but hasnt gotten her shoes yet.

Answer
You match it with her dress, why would you match it with yours? you won't be wearing it. lol. And you dont' want to match it with her shoes. Althought if her shoes are a different color that stands out (for example, black dress, RED shoes.) then you might want to match the corsage with that.

My wedding is in 2 years, but I'm thinking that it is going to take that long finding my gown. I'm not interested in a white gown. Traditionally speaking I'm not supposed to anyway. But I really would like to have an ivory/cream colored gown with a dusty rose color underneath. I'm having a hard time finding anything on the web. Do I contact fabric stores, go to bridal shops, how do i find information on any wedding gowns?
Thanks guys for the help!
Planning weddings are hard.

Answer
Hey! I work at a Bridal Salon! Finally a question I can answer with accuracy! Well, actually I have to agree with the above answerers, definetly go into a salon. A good bridal salon will do dress searches for you and offer options for quality alterations. (some even reasonably) They can order good grade material by the yard and local, established shops will even have recommendations for fellow wedding vendors. (Thus helping you through the daunting task of planning your own wedding.

P.S. Beware the Bridal Department Stores!

What theme would go well for my wedding with these colors in mind?

Aubrey

I am having a spring, outdoor wedding and I have already decided on Ivory, black and lilac as my colors. I just can't think of a good theme. I really want there to be a simplistic, vintage vibe to it, but nothing over the top. I really have no idea.

Answer
This might be a stupid question, but do you have to have a theme? Most weddings I've been to didn't. Either that or I never figured it out! If you mean things like centerpieces, I'd think you'd have a lot of options. Something like this would be nice if you used black candles and baby breath flowers:

http://janetsboutique.com/product_info.php?products_id=30

Also, if you want vintage, try bringing in a lighter and/or darker shades of the lilac you picked. With black and white, you want to avoid anything trending towards art deco, and this would give you extra options for dresses, etc.

August to November should be enough time for Erin to fit and make your gown. She likes to call her designs modern yet modest. Feel free to contact me.

Do Eden Wedding Gowns fit true to size?

wedding gowns online
on ... tips and pointers to help you in finding the perfect wedding dress
wedding gowns online image

Kourtney H

I want to purchase an Eden Wedding gown online. It is only fitted in the top and then ball gowm on the bottom. I tried on numerous wedding dresses in the store. (not this designer) I wore a 16-18 in everyone. 18 comfortably. I wanted to try this dress on but all the stores that carry this designer only carry sizes 6-12. Wondering if anyone has purchased one of their dresses and how true to size they fit.

Answer
Check your measurements to their size chart:
http://www.edenbridals.com/size_chart.php

I found that everywhere except David's Bridal tended to run small compared to "department store sizes". Meaning: if I walk into Macy's, JC Penney, and the like I wear a size 16 dress. In wedding gowns -- including Eden that I was measured for -- I was a 20 or 22 everywhere.
One of my bridesmaids went with an eden dress -- she is a department store size 0 or 2, her Eden dress had to be ordered in a size 6 and it only had to be hemmed, it fit her perfectly everywhere else.

What can I make my wedding gown into?

S K

I don't want to just keep my wedding gown and take up useless space in a closet or attic. I also don't want to pass it on to a daughter, I don't like the idea of that I want to go with her to pick out the perfect dress for herself. Its not in the most perfect condition to be worn again anyhow in some spots. What is something neat I could turn it into that I can pass down?

Answer
There are many places to donate a gown to, some of them give them to brides who because of natural disaster have had their wedding plans ruined. Like when New Orleans was flooded. Charities gave girls prom dresses, and wedding dresses. One of the other answerers gave you some websites.

Sell it online, or at a consignment shop, or through your local newspaper.

A good crafter could do lots of things with it. The best one is to have a Christening gown made with it. Some people make wedding Bible or bridal scrapbook or wedding album covers. Or using it for the background in a scrapbook. Lining a memory box, or for the background of a keepsake shadow box. Covering a Xmas ornament[s] with it. Making a keepsake wedding throw pillow, making doll dresses like Barbie, to sell or to keep the material for your own daughter's doll, or make one special doll and dress for a keepsake. Make the doll itself out of the material, for your own keepsake, or a keepsake for a new baby. Make a heirloom Xmas tree skirt and/or stockings.
Have it made into a patchwork or applique quilt, or use it as part of one.

You might have the gown preserved and keep it intact, and when your daughter marries, take the dress apart and use it to make wedding crafts out of. The flower girl's basket, the card box, a wedding keepsake as above for your daughter, like a handkerchief or the covering for the flower stems of her bouquet. Who knows, maybe hats will be in style at that time for the bride.
It would make a lovely tablecloth for a sweetheart table.

Depending on the material, a wedding sampler can be embroidered on it. and the craft list goes on and on. An evening purse, a purse for a bride to carry some ethnicities do that, the bride carries a purse for people to put cards with money in.

Or just keep it just because. I suppose their is a bride out there who would keep it to use as a Halloween costume at some future date. Others have kept it to wear on an anniversary, if they still can, LOL.

Does it cost money to get fitted for a brides maids dress?

plus size wedding gowns for less image
Q. A friend of mine is getting married in about 8 months. She wants me to go to my first dress fitting 2 weeks after i have my child. I plan on losing A LOT of weight in the next 8 months. I think it's pointless to go to the first fitting because i know i'll be nowhere near that size. Plus doesn't this cost money to have to keep getting alterations? Or does the seamstress not sew anything until the last fitting?

Answer
As a professional seamstress who designs and makes wedding gowns and who used to work in a bridal shop doing alterations...........

I will tell you that knowing you just had a baby, I would not even take you in for a fitting at this point because your body will change, for absolute certainty. Two weeks after a baby is born is not the time for a fitting, not even close, since the wedding is 8 months away. I would want to see you 6 weeks before the wedding if I were doing your alterations. Maybe 8 weeks prior if you were not local.

Yes, a fitting means the seamstress is pinning to alter the dress as pinned. If you come back after the fitting and the alterations and you have lost more weight, prompting another fitting and pinning, that means there will be another alteration, and an additional expense for having to do the work twice. Don't do that.

I do understand that the bride is anxious and wants to check things off of her list, but this is unreasonable to have a fitting two weeks when you have so much more time than that to get this dress fitted correctly the first time.

If it is an issue of location and travel time to a city or state far away, have the dress shipped to you and have an outside qualified seamstress do the alterations in your town. A private seamstress will charge you far less to alter a dress compared to a bridal shop as their prices are super duper inflated, I know that for sure.

I hope this has been helpful and will set your mind at ease. Think about what you want to do and then talk to the bride to calm her fears. She may just be anxious that you will have no time once the baby is older. If you do decide to use a local seamstress, find one before you call her to discuss this matter. If you have all of the answers, she will have a sigh of relief, I assure you that.

EDIT: My above answer was based on if your dress was already at the bridal shop and needed to be fitted to you. If you mean to ORDER the dress, two weeks after the baby is born, then go ahead and get measured and insist they order you a dress a size smaller -- which can be altered when it comes in and yes, you will have to pay for any and all alterations. There is no charge to get measured to order a dress as this is how they know which size to order.

If you live in a distant city, a bridal shop in your city will measure you and forward those measurements to your friend's bridal shop and there will be a charge for that. You need to figure out if the travel time with your baby, the gas and all that is worth the trip or if it is easier to get measured locally. Hope this covers it all.

How much can you typically sell your wedding gown for?

I wore it three weeks ago no stains and had it dry cleaned. I purchased the dress for 675 the slip for 150 and the viel for 200 if I sell this all togehter what should I ask for or am I better off selling sepreate?

Answer
It all depends on the popularity of your dress or how average your size is? If you watch Ebay you frequently see dresses going unsold or for 20 to 30%.

The main benefit for a bride buying your second hand dress is saving money. At 50% it can seem expensive when you adding in some alteration costs, the possibility of cleaning plus the risk of the dress not being right.

Don't be surprised if you get less than 50%.

Best advice is to take good photos, describe the dress well - find a link to the dress on a suppliers website with pricing to show the saving. Honestly describe any flaws in the dress.

Good luck

Where to get casual bridesmaids dresses?

wedding dresses xl image

I live in the north ga/tn area. I would prefer stores I could actually visit. We are having an outdoor August wedding. The groomsmen are going in slacks and white button-ups. Our colors are pink, black and white. (Black and white are more of the accent colors) I want something casual, but not too casual. This is still a wedding, after all. Any suggestions? I'd like to keep it under or around $50. They are paying for their own dresses and I see no reason to make them spend an arm and a leg.

Answer
As it's a casual day wedding, look around at different stores for a nice sundress.

Something like this at Macys
http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=462032&CategoryID=26860

for a little more trendy wedding
http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=455283&CategoryID=26860
http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=453397&CategoryID=26860

A maxi dress would be great and it would be something they could wear again. That might be too casual but a nice chiffon one or one with ombre dye. I know the simple cotton ones are too casual.

There are a lot of dresses on sale in the store though that aren't on the website that look similar to this
http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=452996&CategoryID=22120

Do you have a Maurice's near you? I've bought several of their dresses. Look at New York and Company as well (though their website is horrible).

For online sites, I've ordered from several. I don't have many stores so I have ordered from Body Central, Chadwicks, Newport News, and Venus. I've loved all their dresses though Body Central...isn't for larger women. I am self conscious about my midsection as I could stand to lose 10-15 lbs but I'm usually a size 8 and not a large woman but I wear a large in Body Central and couldn't begin to wear a medium. Most of their dresses don't come in XL.

I would look at Kohl's too. They have a lot of nice summer dresses. How old are your bridesmaids?
http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/womens/dresses/work/PRD~597043/Simply+Vera+Vera+Wang+Chiffon+Shift+Dress.jsp
http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/womens/dresses/work/PRD~572689/Chaps+Empire+Dress.jsp

Also don't overlook a big bridal store like David's Bridal. I don't know how many bridesmaids you have but they have many discontinued styles that you can get on sale.
http://www.davidsbridal.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplayView?storeId=10052&catalogId=10051&categoryId=3001552&currentIdx=46&subCategory=-49998492%257c3001454%257c3001552&catentryId=6092295&sort=

http://www.davidsbridal.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplayView?storeId=10052&catalogId=10051&categoryId=3001552&currentIdx=52&subCategory=-49998492%257c3001454%257c3001552&catentryId=6087315&sort=

Don't overlook how you can accent a dress. You might find a great dress that doesn't quite have enough pink. You can go get hot pink shrug or sashes to go over it. Black and white prints are big.
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_031J5974000P?vName=Clothing&cName=Women%27s&sName=Dresses
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_031DM230000P?vName=Clothing&cName=Women%27s&sName=Dresses

You could easily include a bright pink in with accessories--bangles, chunky necklace, bright shoes.

Stores like Sears, JC Penny's, H&M if you have one, Jones New York, JCrew all carry dress that would be perfect. Any chain that is located where your bridesmaids are would be great. I'd overlook anything that would be too difficult for them. Many stores are in Atlanta but no where else in the South. Also overlook discount centers and places like TJ Maxx as their inventory isn't consistent. If you are all close by, you could do a weekend trip to an outlet mall. I know there is a Tanger Outlet in Sevierville, TN; Commerce, GA; and Locust Grove, GA. This site can help you find more

What is a nice plus size Stepmother of the bride dress?

Laurie

Hi, I am a XL but because I have a broad back I need to go up a size
and talior the rest of the garment. I am looking for a young/hip mother of the bride dress ( age appropratie 48 ). This will be a beach wedding but the reception will be at a country club. It will be a long day so I really need to be comfortable

Answer
Being an XL lady myself, I would suggest a two piece something. Usually far more comfortable than a full dress and gives you more movement in the body too.

Perhaps a three quarter length skirt (to avoid sand and water marks) and a nice top, not too low cut.
Blues, Greens or Silver/Grey are usually good colours for mothers/ step mothers of the bride, with pewter or silver sandals.

What to wear at an english wedding?

I have been invited to an English wedding at a manor Hotel. This is my first English wedding so what do I wear? Being Turkish we normally wear black dresses, but I have heard this is inappropriate. Please I need help, and pictures would be great.

Answer
It isnt an inappropriate colour to wear to an english wedding, usually you can wear watever colour you want unless it states on the invitation to stick to theme colours. Cocktail dresses and evening dresses are most common depending wether wedding is smart/casual or black tie :)

There are some examples but it really depends on your own style and what you look and feel good in :)
Generally it is wise to steer clear of dresses the same colour as the bridesmaids/bride.

Some of the really cheap ones are copies for the real dresses made in cheaper fabric. I used House of Brides, and the dress was a lot cheaper, but not fake!

Okay, so I got this dress at David's Bridal shop but I had to shop in the juniors bridesmaid section because I'm super small. It's really pretty and I love the color, but since it's a juniors bridesmaid dress, it's a little plain. What can I do to make it stand out more? By the way, my prom theme is sort of an island theme if that helps at all. Thanks in advance!

Answer
If you want to take the island theme all the way, put some flowers in your hair ;)

If not, jewellery! Something sparkly or eye-catching or just generally unique. Or, there's always shoes. You can get some interesting heels to pair with the dress, something different that will stand out :)

Does anyone have any good indoor tanning tips?

Q. We are having our wedding on July the fourth and I am fair skinned. I have less than five months to get an awesome tan and keep it up till after the wedding. My dress is white so I dont want to glow in the dark.I have bought a tanning package and lotions also I just found something called Malibu Hemp Golden Glow to help with the color. Any tips would be great like how many times a week to get the tan and then to keep it.

Answer
Well first of all you have to make sure you don't burn!! thats really bad for early aging! Also make sure you ask the person at the counter how new the bulbs are in the bed that you are about to go in, and try to keep to the same bed (if you're going to a place with a lot of beds.) Make sure you don't go in one that has been recently changed. Start by going about 4 min. If you don't burn or turn red, go up to 6,8,10. and so forth till you get to the max min the salon allows. Go every other day, if you go every day you will dry out your skin and burn and loose your tan quickly. If you shower everyday your tan will fade quicker! Make sure you use lotion before you tan and after you tan. Right when you get out of the shower. Once you have a good base, you can go twice a week to keep up your tan till the wedding then you can go how ever many times you want right before the wedding. Just don't over do it, rememeber you're wearing a white dress so you don't want to stand out to much and look fake. (I know once you start tanning and see how good you look and you just wanna get darker and darker) Good Luck!

And what did you do with it after wards? I went wedding dress shopping with my sissy and i did not know how expensive wedding dresses could be. Did you keep your wedding dress or did you sale it after wards? Thanks :)

Answer
Well, my dress was only 40 dollars and i found it at a thrift store in perfect condition. It is a tea-length ivory colored 40s inspired cocktail dress with black crinoline underneath, black lace around the middle and it's halter style with pearl buttons. I cannot tell you enough how surprised I was to find it and how much i love it. i get married in June, so i haven't used it yet but afterwards i plan on keeping it and maybe wearing it again if i ever have another formal event. it doesn't scream wedding. I hate the popular frou-frou princess ballgowns, they're not my taste at all. I also can't comprehend spending thousands of dollars on an ugly dress you'll only wear once...

with the money i saved on the dress we were able to hire a nice photographer and we can afford more food and booze for our guests!

EDIT: why am i getting thumbs down? I'm sorry i got such a great deal, my bad i suppose. lol.

Is it possible to change the style of a weddding dress?

BeautifulL

I want to buy this beautiful wedding dress, but the only problem is the top of the dress. The top is a halter top, but with no support for my breasts(DD). I found a nice dress with a beautiful top, but ugly bottom. So can I buy both dresses and get the top I want put on the bottom I want?

Answer
I would find a seamstress or tailor in your area and bring in a picture of both dresses. Explain that you like the top on one and the bottom on the other and ask if they could make it work. An experienced seamstress could probably do it (provided the dresses are exactly the same color and fabrics or it could look odd together). I would just go in and ask if it was possible and about how much it would cost and decide from there if that is what you want to do.

Hope this helped!

I'm going to be attending a wedding on the other side of the country at the end of September. It's in a very (very!) nice hotel at the end of September. The wedding is at 2:30 with 'cocktails, dinner and formal reception to follow'.
I'm 25 years old, 5'6 and between a size 14-16. I haven't worn a dress since my high school graduation, but the bride has stated that she's excited to see me in one.
What would you recommend?

2. http://images.asos-media.com/inv/media/3/5/9/9/2869953/image4xxl.jpg

Stick with a solid color for a sleek, polished look. Plus, look for versatility! Since it's in the fall, jewel tones are really nice (e.g. emerald, ruby). Royal blue is nice, too! I love maxi dresses or gowns because they cover up the legs and show off the décolletage. Or stick with classic dresses that don't show too much cleavage and the butt cheeks, and are modest in length. Tip: If a dress doesn't go past your fingertips, it's too short!

Dress up your outfit with minimal, simple, and elegant accessories in silver, gold, or both. I would also stick to heels instead of flats.

Good luck finding the right dress!

xo Cee

P.S. I think it's more stressful finding a dress as a guest than it is as a bride! lol

Wedding dresses for short plus sized women?

Berkley

My friend might get married soon and I was wondering what type of dress would look best for her. She is about 5'2 and is about a size 20 so she is a little bigger. She is bigger waist down has a very big bust. Im not doing this to be rude I'm just trying to find answers so she knows what to try on when we go dress shopping.

Answer
An A-line style will likely be the best, they are the most forgiving in the stomach area. Next would be a ball gown. My cousin was 5 months pregnant when she got married (she was planning the wedding before she was pregnant) and she wore an A-Line dress and you couldn't even tell she was pregnant.

I would also have her check out corset shops to help with body shapers, body shapers work great! But some are god awful uncomfortable, which is why I'm recommending a corset shop instead of buying one off the rack, they can custom make one. Yes, they cost a little more, but they fit a lot better!

I was once her size (I'm 5'0" weighed 230, my stomach was my "big" area and I have a big bust, I'm 135 now, my stomach is still my problem and I still have a big bust).

I can tell you from personal experience that she will need to be sure before she goes looking that these bridal shops will have dresses she can actually TRY ON! Many do not for plus sized women, but if you call and make an appointment they usually will try to accomodate you and have them on hand.

If you have a David's Bridal near you, I would really recommend going to them, they have a huge selection in wedding dresses for plus sized women, they have the most to choose from of any designer for that, and they are very nice. Just as an FYI: David's bridal is expensive on their alterations, you may want to find someone else for that.

I was in my brothers wedding, and when we went to get fitted for the dresses, the bride was also a plus size and they didn't "really" have dresses for us to try on that fit. Mine was a special case that I was getting fitted for a dress in Feb/March, having bariatric surgery in June and then the wedding was in October, since we knew I'd weigh less but not how much my dress was ordered a few sizes smaller than what fit for me the day of the fitting, it still had to be taken in more.

Also, formal wear is not very forgiving on sizes, they run very small. A size 20 dress in normal apparel is a 28-30 in wedding apparel. I had sticker/size shock when I figured that out.

I bought an A-line empire waist wedding dress, not very poofy with a short train, and it is very simple. I have been really into lace recently and I wanted to add a layer of Ivory (the color of the current dress) lace over the top of the dress (from the waist down) and i wanted to know if that is possible, and if so, how much do you think it would cost. Thanks so much! I just want to look as beautiful as possible.

Answer
My dear, go to a bridal shop and speak with the seamstress. It is not the material, but the labor that would be costly. A good seamstress probably costs $50 per hour. But your gown sounds lovely, my dear. If u r into lace, can u add lace some other way? A lace hat? Lace stockings?

Can the lace on my wedding dress be removed?

KZack

I'm ordering my wedding dress online and I want a white dress but the lace to be apple red. But I'm worried that it might not be the right color as my sash from david's bridal apple red. If it is the wrong color can I take it out and replace it or I would just order it white and have it dyed. What do you all think? My main concern is can the lace be removed, then I can decided which way to go with this. Thank you.

Answer
to answer your question YES, it can be done. One thing you might want to look into is having a sash made to match the red of the lace that comes in.

What style of wedding dress is flattering for my body?

pixie_vixe

I recently got engaged, and even though the wedding is a bit off, I would like to start looking for a dress now since I understand it is a time consuming process sometimes. I would like to know what would be most flattering for me. I have a very large bust (42 DDD) and many say it is unproportional to the rest of my body. I have recently gained weight, and wear a size 14-15, but up untill recently I have been somewhere between 10-13. So I am not very large, but not tiny either. What style (bodice, waist, sleeve, skirt, train etc) would be most slimming and supportive for my chest? I like lace up front corset tops, but having trouble finding them anywhere.

Answer
I have a 40DD bust and I look good in a halter neck gown, especially one with a v-neck:

An off the shoulder gown with some coverage on the arms is also a really good look:

I really like gowns with sheer sleeves and a deep v-neck that you can wear a regular bra with:

If you are going to wear a gown that requires a strapless bra make sure you get a good one. Also, you don't want a backless bra, once your cup size gets above a D backless is not attractive. I wear a Goddess long line and it holds up the goods pretty well:
http://www.biggerbras.com/goddess-full-figure-plus-size-bras/gds-689.shtml

The train isn't that important, it's more what you want because they all pretty much look the same when you wear it. The skirt isn't as important as the bodice. Pretty much any skirt except maybe mermaid should work for you.

The best advice that I can give you is go and try on gowns. Try on alot of different types of dresses until you find something that looks good on you. Don't get caught up by the little details of the dress, don't buy something because you like the beading. It's more important that the gown looks good on you, not that the lace is nice. You really have to look at yourself in the gown and make sure that it's flattering. Make sure it's not too tight, there's nothing worse than seeing all of brides rolls around her middle. Also if you go with strapless make sure there aren't any rolls hanging out over the top, very unattactive.

Another thing you might want to consider is a bridesmaids dress in a lighter color. Separates might work for you with your large bra size and you can do separates a little easier in bridesmaids dresses, and they're usually less expensive. Although, most bridesmaids gowns don't have a train.

I'm planning to dress up in a saree for a friend's wedding. I've a wheatish skintone. 5' 5'' height and a healthy physique.

Does lavender color suit my skin tone?

Answer
I can't really give an definite answer as I haven't seen the saree on you, but from how you've described your skin tone, the lavendar saree would go. If you feel confortable and confident in the saree, then you should wear it to your friends wedding.

What color suit should the groom wear?

I'm getting married soon; I just bought a bright white wedding dress. My skin tone is olive/tan (I'm filipino) and my fiance has light hair and blue eyes. I have a fear that I may look dark in pictures at the wedding bc the dress is very white. What color suit would compliment our skin tones the best?

Answer
I think lightblue might be a good color, it's different than the usual black, but I think it would be very beautiful.
Or if he doesn't want to maybe a white one.

My husband thinks a "nice dress" from my closest will do, but I think it means GOWN. Can anyone help us with this?

Answer
Ask one of the other women that will be attending. Also the location where the event is being held should be a clue. It is possible that if the men are to be in dress uniform that the women (that are not military) will be in gowns.

Wikipedia:
Formal wear (US/Canada) and formal dress (UK) are the general terms for clothing suitable for formal social events, such as a wedding, formal garden party or dinner, débutante cotillion, dance, or race. The Western style of formal evening dress, characterized by black and white garments, has spread through many countries; it is almost always the standard formal social dress in countries without a formal national costume.

The dress codes considered formal in the evening are white tie and black tie.

The continual relaxation of formal dress standards since the end of the Second World War is redefining what clothes constitute formal and semi-formal dress. The original term full dress was used in the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century to mean the most formal option available, while half dress and undress ranked beneath it. They indicated different clothes, but correspond somewhat to the twenty-first century structure of formal, semi-formal, and informal. These are the terms used by traditional etiquette and dress consultants (especially for weddings), while contemporary consultants use looser, modern definitions, in which white tie is styled as most formal, very formal or ultra formal; black tie as formal; and the traditionally informal lounge suit as pseudo-formal. Moreover, modern advisers recommend black tie for events traditionally considered to require formal dress (white tie), and alternatives for what would have been semi-formal events.

However, formal and semi-formal are unambiguous when it is known they are being used in a traditional setting, even though changing fashions can make these terms ambiguous; white tie and black tie on the other hand refer solely to the combination of relevant clothes themselves, regardless of their setting, and so are much less susceptible to misinterpretation.

Particularly in America, but also around the Western world, there has also been a relaxation regarding the dress codes themselves, with full formal dress (white tie or morning dress) almost unheard of in many places. An example of such a variant is removing the traditional, classic black bow tie required by the black tie dress code in favour of a black or coloured regular tie and waistcoat, a development which would have been unthinkable just a few decades ago.

The dress codes counted as formal wear are the formal dress codes of white tie for evenings and morning dress for daytime, as well as the semi-formal ones of black tie for the evening and strollers in daytime. Dinner suits and dress suits differ in which they don't follow strict coloration. (E.G. A blue bow tie worn instead of a black one.)

The clothes dictated by these dress codes for women include cocktail dresses, evening gowns, and ball gowns. For many uniforms, the official clothing is unisex. Examples of this are law court dress, academic and graduate dress, formal military uniforms and formal military evening dress.

: White tie
The required clothing for men is roughly the following: a (dress) tailcoat; formal trousers, uncuffed, with stripes on leg seams; white piqué bow tie; white piqué vest (waistcoat); white piqué front or plain stiff-fronted shirt with a detachable wing collar; cuff links and shirt studs; black patent leather court shoe; accessories.

Women wear a variety of dresses. See ball gowns, evening gowns, and wedding dresses. Business attire for women had a developmental history of its own and generally looks different than formal dress for social occasions.

Black tie
Main article: Black tie
Briefly, men wear a dinner jacket (tuxedo coat); trousers, uncuffed, with one stripe on leg seams; shirt (stiff wing or soft folded collar) with either a placketed, pleated, piqué, or ruffled front; a black bow tie; a black evening waistcoat or a cummerbund; black, patent leather or calf Oxfords or court shoes; cuff links and shirt studs; accessories.

Again, a variety of dresses is worn by women, including cocktail dresses, little black dresses, and evening gowns.

How do you cook a turkey?

heya

Yeah, I know it's a stupid question for a 22-year-old woman to ask, and that I should know better, and yadda yadda yadda, but Thanksgiving is tomorrow and I don't time to listen to somebody'd scolding. HOW do you cook, say, a 10-pound turkey? To how many degrees do you set the oven? For how long? What do you do with the bird after?

Answer
Definately NOT a stupid question for a 22 year old! Good Luck and Happy Thanksgiving!

Turkey101 from allrecpes.com

A frozen turkey needs to be defrosted. The preferred method is to defrost it in the refrigerator. (Yes, the one filled with the rest of the holiday fare.) Allow one day per 5 pounds. A 15-pound turkey will require three days to defrost thoroughly. An alternate method is to defrost the bird in a cold water bath. Allow 30 minutes per pound. That 15-pound turkey will require only 7 1/2 hours to defrost using this approach. It is also possible to use a combination of these methods.

Now you are ready to prepare the turkey for roasting. First remove the giblets. This is a fundamental step not only because you might want to use them to make the gravy, but also because it is disconcerting to find these paper-wrapped lumps when carving. Next, rinse the bird inside and out. Pat dry with paper towels. If you are stuffing the bird, do so now with a freshly prepared dressing. Stuff loosely, allowing about 1/2 to 3/4 cup per pound of bird. Brush the skin with melted butter or oil. Tuck the drumsticks under the folds of skin or tie together with string. Lastly, insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh. The thermometer should point towards the body, and should not touch the bone.

Place the bird on a rack in a roasting pan, and into a preheated 350 degree F (175 degrees C) oven. Use the following chart to estimate the time required for baking.

Bake until the skin is a light golden color, and then cover loosely with a foil tent. During the last 45 minutes of baking, remove the foil tent to brown the skin. Basting is not necessary, but will promote even browning.

Weight of Bird Roasting Time (Unstuffed) Roasting Time (Stuffed)
10-18lbs
3-3.5 hrs. 3.75-4.5 hrs.
15-22lbs 3.5-4 hrs.
4.5-5 hrs.

22-24lbs 4-4.5 hrs. 5-5.5 hrs.
24-29lbs 4.5-5 hrs. 5.5-6.25 hrs.

The best test for doneness is the temperature of the meat, not the color of the skin. The turkey is done when the thigh meat reaches an internal temperature of 180 degrees F, and when the breast meat reaches an internal temperature of 170 degrees F. If your turkey has been stuffed, it is important to check the temperature of the dressing. The stuffing should be 165 degrees F. When the turkey is done, remove from the oven and allow to stand for 30 minutes.

Maid of Honor Wedding Planning Help?

plus size wedding dresses under 100.00 image

So I was asked to be the Maid-of-honor for a small wedding (small budget).
Surprisingly enough neither the bride or I have ever been to a wedding so I need some help. She is overwhelmed so I'm helping plan it (like I should).

How is a wedding usually set up? A small wedding in particular. SHe wants to have the ceremony and reception in the same place and its outside.
I know there is a ceremony, reception, dance?, etc but what is the order? HOw long does each part usually last?

Thanks for you help! The more details the better :) I've been looking online but sometimes it's easier to have someone lay it out real simple!

Answer
Weddings can be scary to plan if you don't know where to start! It's nice of you to help her though and I'll bet that she really appreciates it :)

Ok so the first thing is the date and the venue. If she's already found and booked that then you're in good shape!

She needs to choose her dress pretty quickly too as it can take between six to eight months if she's ordering one. You'll want to choose your dress and any other dresses about four months before hand. If there are a few girls of different sizes and shapes then it might work better to have everyone in the same colour and different dresses. I had a tall MOH and my BMs were plus sized, super tiny and had just had a baby. So they all wore little black dresses and carried red roses. So pretty!

She'll want a good estimate of how many guests there will be before she begins talking with caterers.

She'll need to decide what kind of reception she wants. Some people like a tea, some like heavy appies and most prefer the traditional dinner. If she opts for a dinner then she will need to decide between a buffet and a served dinner. Served dinners tend to be cheaper and you have the added benefit of not havin g to play those games to see which table goes next as most do with buffets. (Plus no one has to worry about dropping a plate on the bride!)

She'll need to book an officiant. Using a Justice of the Peace tends to be easiest because a lot of churches require premarital counselling and that adds to the wedding costs.

As for a cake, if she has the time then making cupcakes is cute and it saves a few hundred easily. Our costs for a cake would have been about 400.00 or so plus a cake cutting fee of 2.75 per guest. I bought cake mixes, icing tips and stands and spent under 100.00 and the end result was great! You could do plain chocolate with vanilla frosting, vanilla with chocolate frosting and one other kind with another colour/kind of frosting.

Flowers are a funny thing. The second anyone hears the word "wedding" they raise the price way up there. I actually kind of forgot flowers until the day of and just picked up six dozen red roses from Safeway for just under 100.00. They cut and tied them into nosegays (pretty little bouquets) at no extra charge and we wrapped the stems with pretty ribbons. So much cheaper!

Decor is overwhelming at first because there are so many different things that you can do. Don't stress. Just go with things that the bride likes and trust that it'll look good. Chair covers and tablecloths are the best thing that youcan rent. They aren't too expensive and they make everything look good and very polished. We got married in the fall and were going with a black and white damask pattern on everything. It was a bit cold looking so we added a lot of gorgeous fabric leaves and mini gourds to the tables and it was stunning! And cheap! Candles, small stones and crystals, shells, petals, leaves and mirrors all make awesome decor items and are way cheaper than flowers.

Wedding favours are easy to get carried away with too but they don't have to be. I picked up big containers of chocolates from Costco and filled cute little boxes with them and tied them with ribbons. I also made bath bombs (really cheap, fast and easy and people LOVED them) and put them in cute celophane bags. Cookies, candy, little photo frames, personalized cork screws etc are all great ideas. A trick is to buy something inexpensive, add some ribbon and suddenlt you have a pretty little gift.

Be careful with the band or a dj. Make sure that you've heard any band that is there and that either option has a contingency plan in case someone gets sick, simethign is broken etc. Anyone who knows their stuff will have a contract for your friend to sign that will cover all of this.

Get things in writing! Even it a vendor is a friend (especially) get anything that involves money in writing. We had a photographer friend offer to do our photos as a gift to us and she asked me for 500.00 to order prints afterwards. The pictures weren't good and she decided to keep the money and not put it towards prints because we had nothing in writing. And if the photos aren't good then invest in Photoshop Elements so that they can be fixed :)

A good photographer won't be cheap but it'll be worth it. Make sure that she goes with someoen who has a good wedding portfolio and that you like hsi or her work and that you have everything in writing there.

I think all that's left are clothes for the guys, gifts for the attendants and hair/makeup for the big day.

She's going to want to have everything reserved as quickly as possible. The invites should go out about three months beforehand. She'll also need to get the marriage license taken care of about a month or so beforehand too.

Best dress to wear to a wedding?

All right. I've been to one other wedding but this time I'm going with someone who I just want to BLOW away by looking great. Firstly, what dress is appropriate to wear to someone's wedding? Evening gown? Cocktail? Ball? Women! Gay men! Help! Let me give some details: I'm about 5'4" -- Green eyes, brunette, olive skin tone. I'm full figured... I have a chest, I have a butt, I have hips. I would like something that flatters but doesn't make me look like a walking tea-pot. I'm not a plus-size. Any suggestions on color, style, shoes and hair would be great! Thanks!
The wedding is your standard formal wedding. It's at night. I'm in Arizona and it's in February.
I'd prefer a dress over pants. I rarely get to be dolled up for anything so I'd like to take the opportunity. My hair is long, but not excessive. Right below the shoulder blades.

Answer
If you want to blow him away you must look like you did not put too much effort in looking great. Therefore, "excess" is something that you need to stay away from. You don't want everybody's eyes on you for the wrong reason: you want his eyes on you for the very right reasons.

Choose a discrete, elegant, non show-off dress. Check out America Ferrara's dress at the Golden Globes ceremony last Monday. She too is full figured, yet not plus-size. She has your same complexion. Her dress was beautiful, it showed off her main attributes. She has boobs and she showed it, yet in a very elegant and classy way. I think the color of the dress was some shade of purple/blue. Beautiful. Purples go wonderful on green-eyed brunettes. I would not wear an evening gown. A cocktail dress would be appropriate, it will let you show some leg as well. The shoes I'd pick depend a lot on the dress, but as in the dress' case keep it simple, classy, and sexy.

You don't mention your hair length, but if it's not too long, say at your shoulders' length, I'd keep it loose, very natural, brushed straight but with volume on the roots and tips, that you can add with a curler. If it's long you may want to curl it up some, with long wide waves, like Jennifer Hudson at the Golden Globes. Or check out at the Golden Globes too Grey's Anatomy actress Sara Ramirez. She was beautiful, her hair, her dress, gorgeous.

Good luck... and good looks.
