My friend might get married soon and I was wondering what type of dress would look best for her. She is about 5'2 and is about a size 20 so she is a little bigger. She is bigger waist down has a very big bust. Im not doing this to be rude I'm just trying to find answers so she knows what to try on when we go dress shopping.

Answer
An A-line style will likely be the best, they are the most forgiving in the stomach area. Next would be a ball gown. My cousin was 5 months pregnant when she got married (she was planning the wedding before she was pregnant) and she wore an A-Line dress and you couldn't even tell she was pregnant.

I would also have her check out corset shops to help with body shapers, body shapers work great! But some are god awful uncomfortable, which is why I'm recommending a corset shop instead of buying one off the rack, they can custom make one. Yes, they cost a little more, but they fit a lot better!

I was once her size (I'm 5'0" weighed 230, my stomach was my "big" area and I have a big bust, I'm 135 now, my stomach is still my problem and I still have a big bust).

I can tell you from personal experience that she will need to be sure before she goes looking that these bridal shops will have dresses she can actually TRY ON! Many do not for plus sized women, but if you call and make an appointment they usually will try to accomodate you and have them on hand.

If you have a David's Bridal near you, I would really recommend going to them, they have a huge selection in wedding dresses for plus sized women, they have the most to choose from of any designer for that, and they are very nice. Just as an FYI: David's bridal is expensive on their alterations, you may want to find someone else for that.

I was in my brothers wedding, and when we went to get fitted for the dresses, the bride was also a plus size and they didn't "really" have dresses for us to try on that fit. Mine was a special case that I was getting fitted for a dress in Feb/March, having bariatric surgery in June and then the wedding was in October, since we knew I'd weigh less but not how much my dress was ordered a few sizes smaller than what fit for me the day of the fitting, it still had to be taken in more.

Also, formal wear is not very forgiving on sizes, they run very small. A size 20 dress in normal apparel is a 28-30 in wedding apparel. I had sticker/size shock when I figured that out.

What style of wedding dress is flattering for my body?

I recently got engaged, and even though the wedding is a bit off, I would like to start looking for a dress now since I understand it is a time consuming process sometimes. I would like to know what would be most flattering for me. I have a very large bust (42 DDD) and many say it is unproportional to the rest of my body. I have recently gained weight, and wear a size 14-15, but up untill recently I have been somewhere between 10-13. So I am not very large, but not tiny either. What style (bodice, waist, sleeve, skirt, train etc) would be most slimming and supportive for my chest? I like lace up front corset tops, but having trouble finding them anywhere.

I have a 40DD bust and I look good in a halter neck gown, especially one with a v-neck:

An off the shoulder gown with some coverage on the arms is also a really good look:

I really like gowns with sheer sleeves and a deep v-neck that you can wear a regular bra with:

If you are going to wear a gown that requires a strapless bra make sure you get a good one. Also, you don't want a backless bra, once your cup size gets above a D backless is not attractive. I wear a Goddess long line and it holds up the goods pretty well:

The train isn't that important, it's more what you want because they all pretty much look the same when you wear it. The skirt isn't as important as the bodice. Pretty much any skirt except maybe mermaid should work for you.

The best advice that I can give you is go and try on gowns. Try on alot of different types of dresses until you find something that looks good on you. Don't get caught up by the little details of the dress, don't buy something because you like the beading. It's more important that the gown looks good on you, not that the lace is nice. You really have to look at yourself in the gown and make sure that it's flattering. Make sure it's not too tight, there's nothing worse than seeing all of brides rolls around her middle. Also if you go with strapless make sure there aren't any rolls hanging out over the top, very unattactive.

Another thing you might want to consider is a bridesmaids dress in a lighter color. Separates might work for you with your large bra size and you can do separates a little easier in bridesmaids dresses, and they're usually less expensive. Although, most bridesmaids gowns don't have a train.

Good luck, I hope you find a gown that you love.
