What color works like black for dark skinned black women?
If black is the 'sexy' color for white and light brown skin, what color gives that same effect for black women who are dark chocolate and coffee bean complected? And the same for nail polish: if black is the 'rocker' color for white and light brown skin, what is the 'rocker' color for dark skinned black women?

Answer
I don't see why you can't wear black as well.

Black dresses on white women is the complete opposite, so a white dress will pop on you. I however think that a red or fuchsia (maybe a coral, too) will pop on you.

What kind of dress and make up do you think I should wear to prom based on what I look like?

Chelsea

Like what colors, styes and etc. I think almost everyone wears cocktail dresses to the prom in my school. I'm planning on curling my hair and leaving it down. Here is my description:

Age: 17
Hair Color: Dark Brown
Eye color: Very dark brown
Skin color: Light
Height: 5''5
Weight: 95 Lbs.

Answer
Well it sounds like you don't want to stand out by not wearing a cocktail dress, otherwise you wouldn't have mentioned that everyone at your school wears them. However you're not very tall so a cocktail dress that goes down to your knees then it could make you look short and fat, despite how skinny you probably are, unless you got a cocktail dress that was the length of a mini, but again you're only 5'5" so it might still seem long on you. You should go for a bodice top dress, perhaps one that goes down to your calves, or full length if you want but I won't suggest it. I'm 5'2" and 93 lbs so I figure we have similar body types.

As far as color goes dark colors would be lovely on you. Emerald green, blood red, dark blue. They will make you're skin seem like porcelain because of you dark hair and eye color. If you go for a lighter color they could possibly make you appear washed out. Medium tones would just be ok. Nothing special there. You'll blend in.

Take into account your favorite colors and personality. You may also get to the store and have a color and style all picked out but find that none of the dresses in that color or style are something you like. It;s good to have an idea but dont limit yourself to just dresses in the color you choose. hope your dress shopping goes well =)

Where can I get a polka dot wedding dress?

Heather G

Like most brides I want my wedding dress to be different. I have always wanted a polka dot wedding dress, does anyone know where I can find one?

Answer
there are a number of ways you can try to find a polka dot wedding dress. these three dress designers had polka dot wedding gowns in their collections in the past 4 years so you might be able to find one of them online as a slightly used or pre-owned dress or even at a discontinued store.

caroline herrara had a polka dot number which i believe was called "daisy". you should be able to find it by googling.

maggie sottero had a polka dot wedding dress which came in various colored polka dots. the dress name was "rasharna". someone might have one in your size.

j crew had two polka dot wedding dresses. one was called "lucerne gold" and the other was "celeste pique dot" . i have seen them recently online being sold by owners.

this website has a vintage look polka dot wedding dress in white on white. very cute. http://www.unique-vintage.com/stop-staring-exclusive-white-polka-mesh-grace-wedding-dress-p-3040.html

if you are willing to go with a colored wedding dress, here are some selections of elegant long gowns in polka dot. http://www.promgirl.com/shop/color-dresses/polka-dot-dresses

I have been searching for a wedding dress and have found a designer that I think fits me perfectly, but I don't dare to dream yet because I don't know how much they cost. I have tried to search but cannot find any idea... please help!

Answer
I watch "Say Yes to the Dress" all the time and they exclusivly carry the dresses there. I have yet to see one under $5,000....and that was for a simple slim a line gown with some beading and fun detail at the bottom. I think tha is probably your avereage starting point. I have seen the ball gowns with detail run over $20,000. Kleinfield's is the ONLY place that carries them. You can always make an appt and go in if you are in the area...you do not have to buy but expect anything in that store to be at least $2000 with tax and minimal alterations and that is for a plain Jane dress. I would say if you do not have a budget of at least $6000 find another designer. Good luck!

How much did you spend on your wedding dress?

Wifey

I am looking at purchasing a wedding dress because my husband and I will be having our ceremony..We haven't picked a date yet, but soon! lol I was wondering how much is too much, to spend on a gown?

Thank you!

Answer
I think it's safe to say that the "perfect price" is one that fits your budget.
I've noticed a few thumbs down on all the answers that go above $2000, but that's probably a bargain hunter that got her dress for less than $100. Good on her, but her budget was different to some others.

My dress, veil shoes and hoop all came to just under $1600. I found out shortly after i purchased it that i could get the exact dress elsewhere for half the price i paid, but i figured that this way i already have the availability of altering it, and the hem was already a custom height.

I have to go to my cousin's wedding in May. It's going to be a "fancy" wedding, with a lot of people and family. I am 23, and asian with medium skin tone. Do you think this dress is wedding appropriate? Do you think it looks alright for my age? And what color shoes or purse would you wear with it?

http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=356365&CategoryID=43172

Answer
I thnk that is a nice dress for that occasion and would really suit your skin tone. i would probably go with a pair of silver shoes like in the picture that arent busy buti would get a pair without the strap across the ankle because that makes the legs look shorter and fatter. i would also say a pearly white/ cream coloured purse with a silver chain strap would look nice i dont knw why i thought that but i could just imagine it going with that dress. hope it helped x

What color smokey eye would go good with a black dress and red heels?

Renetta

I have a little black dress and I was thinking about wearing red shoes, but I don't know what color eye shadow to wear. I wanted to wear a black and silver smokey eye since my jewelry is silver, but I didn't know if that would be too dramatic. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Answer
I was thinking blacks, grays, and silvers too. It is dramatic looking, but you could always blend a lot. You could also do a copper smokey eye. Another one is a gold smokey eye. I would wear very little blush and a light pink lipstick or gloss since you will have a smokey eye.

Just me

I'm getting married April 2013...my fiancé will be wearing black dress shorts, white long sleeved button up with a pink tie. I'm going to wear a white dress of some sort. My mother is saying that our wedding will look stupid & now I'm afraid she'll be right. My fiancé & I are not the dress up type. I want us to look good but also be comfortable. Any suggestions?

Answer
I think the shorts with a long sleeve shirt & tie are going to be a bit weird. Why not have him wear khaki pants with a pink shirt? (I'm assuming pink is one of your wedding colors). That would keep him casual looking, but still dressy enough to be ID'd as the groom.

Then you could wear a more casual styled wedding dress.
David's Bridal has an adorable print wedding dress you might want to check out: http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_T3267-T3267_Bridal-Gowns-Shop-By-Style-Destination
Otherwise, you could keep it casual with a short dress: http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_Short-Printed-Organza-Gown-with-Floral-Sash-WG3313_Bridal-Gowns-Shop-By-Silhouette-Short
Or just a simple designed white dress:

Tee Tee

i.e. something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, etc..
Thanks to all who have responded, but I am referring to the old saying, something borrowed, something blue, something old, something new.
What is the rest of it?

Answer
Ideas for Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

We love the "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" wedding tradition, don't you? It's one of the only wedding traditions that still makes sense in today's society. It isn't darkened by old superstitions about fertility and virginity or cheapened by old wives tales about the moon's alignment. It's just plain cute. If you can, try to select items that can be placed in your keepsake box and passed down to your daughter or daughter-in-law.

Old
The "old" item represents something you are leaving behind or something that is being passed down to you.

· Your grandmother's wedding photo in a silver locket
· Your fiancé's first lost tooth
· Your mother's wedding band on your right ring finger

New
The "new" item represents something you are adopting through your marriage or something that is unique to your new union.

· Your engagement picture on the other side of the silver locket
· The key to your new home
· A token of your first date like a ticket stub or cocktail napkin.

Borrowed
The "borrowed" item should be symbolic of something you respect or admire about someone or something.

· Your best friend's energy crystal
· Your mother's monogrammed handkerchief
· Your mother-in-law's pearl necklace

Blue
The "blue" item really has no symbolism that we can think of - it simply rhymes with "new." Try to select something hidden and small that only you (and later on, your new hubby!) know about.

· A sapphire Austrian crystal heart pendant
· Paint your toes with light blue polish
· A thin light blue ribbon on your garter

~~~~~~~~~~~
The next line of this old saying actually hints at its origin. The complete phrase is:
Something old, something new
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.
A sixpence is a coin that was minted in Britain from 1551 to 1967. It was made of silver and worth six pennies. So this wedding tradition is definitely English, and many sources say that it began in the Victorian era.
Each item in this poem represents a good-luck token for the bride. If she carries all of them on her wedding day, her marriage will be happy. "Something old" symbolizes continuity with the bride's family and the past. "Something new" means optimism and hope for the bride's new life ahead. "Something borrowed" is usually an item from a happily married friend or family member, whose good fortune in marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride. The borrowed item also reminds the bride that she can depend on her friends and family.
As for the colorful item, blue has been connected to weddings for centuries. In ancient Rome, brides wore blue to symbolize love, modesty, and fidelity. Christianity has long dressed the Virgin Mary in blue, so purity was associated with the color. Before the late 19th century, blue was a popular color for wedding gowns, as evidenced in proverbs like, "Marry in blue, lover be true."
And finally, a silver sixpence in the bride's shoe represents wealth and financial security. It may date back to a Scottish custom of a groom putting a silver coin under his foot for good luck. For optimum fortune, the sixpence should be in the left shoe. These days, a dime or a copper penny is sometimes substituted, and many companies sell keepsake sixpences for weddings.
Does anybody think this is an unlucky color for a wedding ?
This is the colour and it would be the bridesmaids dress
Answer
Those are beautiful dresses in a lovely color, and I'd hate for you to give those up over some dumb superstition (which I've never even heard of, BTW). There is no color bridesmaid's dress that will bring bad or good luck. FWIW, I wore a bright red bridesmaid's dress in my brother's wedding, and they've been happily married 21 years! And if something had gone wrong in their marriage, it certainly would not have been because of the color dress the bridesmaids wore!
Hi, I am a XL but because I have a broad back I need to go up a size
and talior the rest of the garment. I am looking for a young/hip mother of the bride dress ( age appropratie 48 ). This will be a beach wedding but the reception will be at a country club. It will be a long day so I really need to be comfortable
Answer
Being an XL lady myself, I would suggest a two piece something. Usually far more comfortable than a full dress and gives you more movement in the body too.
Perhaps a three quarter length skirt (to avoid sand and water marks) and a nice top, not too low cut.
Blues, Greens or Silver/Grey are usually good colours for mothers/ step mothers of the bride, with pewter or silver sandals.
what would my wedding dress size be?
jessica m
im 5'2 170 lbs I have no idea what my actual measurment are and I live in a small town in alaska so there is no wedding dress stores here or professionals who can measure me. I have never tried on a wedding dress before I know nothing about dress sizes either. So im going on my weight and height and im wondering if anyone could give me and rough idea of what wedding dress size I would be at this weight with a height of 5'2? If anyone could help it would be great thanks!
Answer
HI I'm 5'10" and have been every size under the sun. My BMI has ranged as an adult from 20-45 from ages 25-35. Currently I'm at 32.5. Based upon your height and weight, this puts you with a BMI of 31. Based upon what size clothes I wear with a BMI of 31 which is a 14 fitting into them easy, I would expect that you would wear the same in regular jeans, a 14. AA (Alfred Angelo) caters to fuller sized real women, and should you go with him I would expect you to wear a size 14, however agree with others that it depends on the fit, your figure, and generally you go up 1-2 sizes.
I have known a lot of people in life that have shared weight concerns and have been every size at every height, generally the BMI is the best equivalent and rings true more than most. One of my best friends is 5'0", she is wearing 12 (tightly) but really 14's and she weighs 173 with a BMI of 33, she is a 36C and generally buys tops that say size large in misses and does not buy juniors, sometimes she gets an XL if the top is cut small.
Only one color is mentioned for the wedding color - royal blue. Since the mother of the bride, brides maids, and grandmothers will be wearing royal blue, I feel like this would be too much blue. Can I wear another color?
Answer
that is too much blue. but you should ask the bride. she has the final word. I think a nice dark silver would look nice, or maybe lavender or sage green. the mothers usually wear something muted, not the same color as the bridesmaids! as for length, nothing above the knee. go find a few dresses you like and then show the bride. then you can return the ones she doesn't like.
My wedding is July 10, 2011 I'm having it a a hotel in New Orleans on my mother's birthday R.I.P...I love canary yellow,blues,whites Help!!!...lol i would also appreciate if you would show me pictures and ideas!..Thank you so much
And what color flowers,shoes and jewelry what type of flowers omg...this planning is too much lol..
Answer
To me blue, yellow and whites are a fav. and a beautiful combo. Go to these sites and have a look, on http://www.teleflora.com look under blue flowers for blue iris, light blue hydrangea, blue anemone and of course blue delphinium. Also, look at one of my favs. Beautiful in Blue, try to imagine it with a few small yellow roses and also under blue look at Everything's Beachy. And under yellow flowers look at Basket of Memories and Spring Waltz, while these two have lavender flowers, try to picture them with blue flowers instead of the lavender. My all time fav for these colors and I think it is in several categories is Meet Me In Provence---gorgeous and just what you need, you can click on any bouquet and description will tell you all flowers used and you can get an up close view of them. Look under all categories, like love and romance, best sellers, etc.
Out of the new Pantone wedding colors, found under http://www.dessy.com top ten wedding colors, there is a blue, called regatta, beautiful and Blue Curaco. Also, go to this same site and there is a color palette, I guess you would call it and you can click on any color, get name of color and there is a large swatch which shows a larger view of the color you clicked on---my favs. under blue were the periwinkle and cornflower and the yellow picks were snapdragon (a mild yellow) and daisy a more sun bright yellow.
Another good site is http://www.fromyouflowers.com
My fav. bouquets are while lillies (so feminine) yellow roses and the blue delphinium.
You can also google blue and yellow wedding flowers.
Shoes will not matter if gowns are long and I am assuming BM gowns are blue, this is the one I would pick. I love yellow, but, to me a yellow dress is a lots of yellow.
There are many yellow flowers, from roses,ranunculus (which looks like a small open rose) lillies,yellow calla lillies(gorgeous), dahlias,tulips, white orchids with yellow center, spray orchids, daisies, mums and carnations and mini carnations. And the blue hydrangea is a fav, especially for summer weddings. HOWEVER, the most important thing is to pick a good florist and talk with her about flowers that will be in season or that she can order for that time of year.
Jewelry---depends on formality of wedding. Pearls with blue are always regal, romantic whether a small strand or a single pearl. Google wedding jewelry. Also cz's a single tear drop is pretty with cz stud earrings. I personally do not like necklaces, to me they take away from the neckline of the dress. I like the larger pearls and sometimes you can find them with a tiny diamond/cz at the top for just that dot of elegance. I can picture this in my mind, but I am seeing tea length gowns and as such, shoes, shoes----dye, acrylic??? or a simple small heel slip on with top a nude/neutral color. I like the acrylic slip on heels with a bow or something on them and you can also buy earrings and attach to the strap/top piece of shoe, hot glue earrings in your colors in a bow or i like a cz mixed with blue stones. Very easy to do. And the shoes look like they came that way, just use lots of glue, but not too much, you don't want it to glob out the sides. If a simple wedding, I have seen like a wedge type sandal with ribbons that tie around the ankles, which could be blue, you could remove ribbons and dye or pick ribbon you want and take to a good shoe shop and have them attach to back of shoe, then wind ribbon as tall as you want around ankle. I like only one wind around the ankle and then tie in a bow.
One thing I would like to add in, and you did not ask this, but I have found that if you have your wedding on anyone's birthday, anniversary, holiday or the date of your Mothers death, later in life this overshadows your wedding day/anniversary. She will be in your thoughts anyway and this is a very emotional day, so just from someone else who has lost their Mother, kindly said, re-think this date. We were married on my father's birthday and in October lost him to Alzheimer's. Just a thought for you to consider.
Also, for help, google wedding checklists and get about three and then make a master checklist and you can add/delete as your budget allows.
Some good sites: http://www.theknot.com this one has a color palette, a checklist and a budgeter
http://www.weddingbee.com
http://save-on-crafts.com
http://www.weddingmountain.com
I also like to suggest google a name/adress change kit that comes with all the forms you need for the state you live in.
Where to should we elope to for super cheap?
okeydokeyj
My fiance and I have been engaged for two years, we have a baby girl and are spending most if not all of our money on bills & our daughter....
We do not have the luxury of having anyone else pay or even helping out with the wedding costs. I already have my gown and we already have our rings.
We have decided that we are gonna elope and just have a small special intimate wedding between the two of us. We live less than an hour outside of new orleans and assume that is where we will wind up, but does anyone have any other places in mind we could go for super cheap, like under $800.00???
Answer
There are tons of beautiful places in St.Francisville, LA (about 2 hours north of New Orleans). There are SO MANY Antebellum homes in the area with bed and breakfasts and a wonderful Justice of the Peace for the area. One B&B that comes to mind immediately is Butler Greenwood Plantation.
://www.butlergreenwood.com/
They have little private cabins throughout the property that you can rent (they even have kitchens for around $135/nt) and then you could even have the ceremony performed out underneath the old, gigantic Live Oak Trees. I would check with management to make sur this is ok, but I can't see why not, especially if there are no guests and it wouldn't bother other guests! (A friend of mine stayed there for two nights for their Honeymoon and loved it!)
Ther is also The Bluff's Golf and Country Club, they have a lodge and a large clubhouse with resturaunt! VERY NICE also!
http://www.thebluffs.com/
Another idea in the area: There is a beautiful park in downtown, surrounded by Live Oak trees and has a gazeebo in the center, it is free to use, and many people have gotten married there before! If the B&B is more than you want to spend there is a Best Western Hotel on the Lake (not sure of their rates). There are tons of wonderful resturaunts in the area, of all price ranges.
check out http://www.stfrancisville.us/
If you want information on the name and contact information for the Justice of the Peace, email me! I live locally and would love to help you in any way!
I know local florists, and info on some good priced photography!
You could also try Natchez, MS, very similar to St.Francisville! Or places in Lafayette, LA. I do know quite a bit about these areas also!
Good luck and congrats!
How should you dress to try on wedding gowns and also how should you do your hair and makeup?
I am going gown shopping and have a hair appointment before. Should I get my makeup done? Also what gowns might you suggest at David's bridals?
Answer
1] Start at the top:
1] hair - are you wearing it up or down for the wedding? Straight or curly? Wear it that way when you shop for gown and headpiece.
2] makeup - no, don't get it 'done'. You have enough to worry about, besides smearing your makeup trying on dresses.
Wear your everday minimum - they will ask you to blot of lipstick etc. anyway.
3] wear a:
a] strapless bra - more neckline options
b] pantyhose
c] heels the height you want for wedding [ and closed or open toe ]
4] try on all the diiferent shades - white, ivory, off white; all different necklines, all different skirts, sleeves, waists.
Bring someone to help/take notes [ 'ooh, i like the neck, but not the sleeves'- illusion neck yes, bell sleeves no recorded in yes and no columns. ]
Then sales lady can help you find a gown with all the features you want.
Also bring one of your attendents to pick out their gowns, after you record all body types of your bridesmaids [ pear shaped, plus sized, petite, boy shaped, busty ].
Anyone know of a store in the US that carries plus size petite wedding gowns?
FireFoxy
I'm a plus size 20 but I'm five foot one and I need a nice wedding dress from a reliable store/site. David's bridal has some good ones but I don't think they carry plus size dresses for petite women... Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Answer
Sorry what you are looking for doesn't exist :(. What I recommend to my petite brides is look for a dress that has an uncomplicated waist seam (not covered in lace and beads) or one with no lace on the hem so it can be easily altered.
What are some online 50s vintage boutiques?
I'm looking for 1950s / pin-up clothing - sweaters, pants, heels, dresses, skirts, etc. Love the style.
None of this Forever 21 Hot Topic "scene" crap. I mean real deal vintage.
Thank you!
Answer
I agree with the girl above me, but I think I saw another post and you already knew about the store...
Definitely try:
http://www.etsy.com/
They have all sorts of vintage clothes...you just have to search, try the different searches like "pin-up", "1950's" etc...
This site is most wedding gowns, they seem 50's inspired if not vintage:
SOMETIMES they carry 50's-ish stuff, nice stuff either way:
http://www.modcloth.com/
http://www.bonadrag.com/
But this is probably exactly what you are looking for:
Haha, it took a while before I could find it out of all my bookmarks...I might even have more site for you to check, but that's all the searching I'm doing for now! Send me a message if you want more links! : )
Hope this helped a little!
I am finding it realllly difficult to find a prom dress that will suit me. Everything is either too big in some places and too small in others and nothing seems to suit me. What do you think will suit me?
Here is some information about my size:
Height: 5ft 7
Weight: 125 pounds.
Bust: 32DD
Waist: 25 inches
Hips: 36 inches.
I also have brown hair and brown eyes.
Any advice would be appreciated :)
Answer
Having a fabulous hourglass figure means you can wear a lot of styles - but you'd look fab wearing stuff from/influenced by the 30s, 40s and 50s.. also you'd look great in corset dresses!
