I dont want guest to feel stuffy & uptight but I don't want them to dress tacky?

Q. I went to a wedding that my cousin was having and guest were instructed to dress in BLACK TIE attire. Well you kind of ended up feeling stuffy or not see free to let loose. Now, maybe that's her personality.

However, my fiance and I are pretty trendy and lively. We want guest to have the mindset of BLACK TIE, but don't want them to look trashy either. IS ANYONE FALLING ME? I guess I am assuming that the dresscode will kind of set the tone for how the guest will relax.

How can I nicely, if possible, get across to them that the attire is TRENDY/GROWN & SEXY/ ELEGANT/CLASSY?
@ Aspasia... YES MOST OF MY FRIENDS ARE CLASSY.. bc I am classy, but that does not mean they all know etiquettes. And I will not make a generalization about all assuming that most know what I expect.

As a matter of fact that comment makes no sense. That's the whole point of a dresscode to make sure that everyone is on the same page. ENOUGH SAID
I NEVER STATED THAT THE INVITATIONS WOULD STATE THE DRESS CODE. I asked a question about informing guest of what to wear. I have a wedding website, so I would have put it there or somewher in the invitation envelope.
Mrs R... IT DOES MATTER TO ME OR I WOULDN'T HAVE POSTED THE QUESTION. Do you get the whole concept of etiquettes and uniformity? There is always going to be a dresscode and a standard where ever you go. If your church ask their paritioners to not wear hats (men) or revealing tops (women), does it mean that the leader doesn't love the LORD? NO.. it's just a preference.. sets the tone
@ BLUNT.. The smart comments mean nothing. There is a way to get your point across with being an ASS so for the sake of not wasting my time bc we are on the internet.. Thanks for your time and comment

Answer
lol I sure do understand you, Hon....you want your guests to dress well out of respect for your special day, but don't want them to feel that they have Emily Post looking over their shoulders and Miss Manners tsk-tsking at them from a corner.

so, print on your RSVP card at the bottom....(NOT on the invitation as that would be a tsk-tsk from BOTH Manners and Post) the dress code.

Semi-formal wear : men business suits , ladies cocktail dresses, dress suits, dress pants suits. That way, if they dress in a mode acceptable for Easter Sunday church services, you'll be fine

They will read everything on the RSVP card even tho they do return it...

or

state the dress code on the printed set of directions to both wedding and reception venue.

Setting a dress code is both proper and expected when it comes to any kind of party....as the host/hostess it is your obligation to let the guests know the type of reception it is ( your party, so you decide how casual or formal) so they can dress accordingly but remember, it is a suggestion...and most people do follow those suggestions. Think of how upset a guest would feel if they came way overdressed or underdressed compared to everyone else? Every wedding I have been to save one stated the mode of dress, and in my 56 years I've been to alot of weddings...good luck.

What style/color of prom dress would look best on me?

Prom is coming up and I really have no clue what color and style of dress I should look for. Does anybody know what would look best for my hair color and skin tone? I'm pretty pale, have really really really long darkish blond hair. I am 5' 7'' and 123 pounds, pretty small chested, flat stomach, but thicker legs, so short dresses don't look too great on me :/ Also suggestions for jewelry, accessories, and shoes would be appreciated! There is a link to a picture of me to help! Thanks! (:
Hairstyle tips would be great too! My hair is so long so it's hard to curl :/

Answer
can i just start off with how beautiful you are!!!, your hair is amazing!!

You would look good in a long flowy dress, baby blue chiffon material or a lilac, deep purple, those colours would look great, and because your tall (like me) long length will suit your figure beautifully....a few sparkles/diamanté would look great......dont go for a puffed-out dress, it will suit you but a loose flowy one will really compliment your figure :)

http://syracusepromdress.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Blush-prom-dress-9513.jpg - this is so cute and elegant

SHOES - because you are pale, silver is the perfect colour for you skin tone, go for a small ish heel like this - https://www.glitzy-n-glamorous.com/images/silvercrisscross31.jpg

BAG - pick a silver bag, try and match it with your shoes/ dress

ACCESSORIES - depends on the fitting of your dress if you dont have any fancy one-shoulder straps or strap wear a very elegant dimante necklace, dangly earring a ring and a cute bracelet, try and keep it matching too, a little colour would look good on the jewellery, (matching your dress)

HAIR - keep the colour its gorgeous, maybe you colour try sleeping in rollers? if you want it curly as it will make the curls stronger then curl with curler using very good hair products, try braiding it too, half up and down hair styles look very classy.....a updo would look really good too
