Is this dress ok to wear as a wedding guest to church and the reception?

Willow

Ok this is what I have planned to wear to a wedding next week but I want some opinions on whether or not it's appropriate. is it ok to wear to both the church and reception? not sure about shiny clothes during the day.
With the dress I'll also have tights or stockings and ankle boots. I have the short jacket as well but in black.
The wedding is posh and formal with the girls in dresses and guys in suits.

Answer
I think if you are in your late teens/early 20s and this is your style, it will be great. I'm 26 and too old to pull off a trendy look like this, but I definitely don't think it's inappropriate - and I think the pattern on the dress is very cool. Since weddings are fancier than normal occasions, you can do sequins/shine/etc during the day.

I would do black opaque tights to balance the short skirt on the dress since you're going to be in a church.

Some ways to cut cost at your wedding.?

I don't agree with some of these but I just copied them from Brides. It's called the $5000 club where brides have thrown fabulous weddings and receptions under $5k. I'll start with the Cheap, Not Chic part. See if you agree.

Cheap, Not Chic

>>Cash bar
>>E-mailing your thank you notes
>>Fake flowers
>>Renting fewer chairs than guests
>> Decorating with balloons and crepe paper
>>Skimping on staff tips
>> Faux (styrofoam) wedding cake
>>Cold cut sandwiches
>>Not feeding the DJ
>>Borrowing shoes that don't fit.
>>Asking guests to help pay for the wedding. (cash donations, an extended "dollar dance")

Ways to save big bucks!

>>Check with your friends to see if you can borrow thinks like a cake serving set. It keeps the tradition without you buying something you'll never use again.

>>You don't need a pricey guestbook. Buy a beautiful photography book and have guests sign the pages and use it as a coffee table book.

>>Consider making red one of your wedding colors. You can buy lots of red things after Valentines Day on sale for up to 75%. We filled clear vases with red crystals I found in the Valentines Day 75% off sale for .50 a bag when the same ones were at a more expensive place for $3 a bag!

>>I can't afford fancy invitations so I am designing my own. I am very savy with a computer and go to crane.com for impriintable inviations.

>>A friend of mine is getting certified as a minister. It saved us $500

>>We are having a small wedding cake so we can still feed each other, but buying a less expensive sheet cake to be cut in the kitchen so they guest won't know the difference.

>>I am saving money on flowers by shopping at a local farmers market to see what I can arrange with local farmers.

>> Depending on your wedding, you might want to check out local musicans instead of hiring a professional. We put flyers up at a local jazz club and saved almost $1000 with them instead of hiring a "wedding band" also check out local colleges. Just make sure you have auditions!

>>We rented a hall with it's own sound system. We hooked up our IPOD and saved $900. We asked guest in their invitations what songs they like so we had a variety of music playing.

>>Have your wedding at a State Park. It was $300 to rent the amphitheater for the ceremony and the beach house for the reception.

>>Change your wedding to a Friday or Sunday. Some venues drop dramatically in price on a Friday or Sunday.

OH and I added my own. I found a great website to order your flowers at discounted price. Since we are having a large wedding, with a large venue I was excited to see we could cut $5k off our flower budget by having our flowers ordered http://www.fiftyflowers.com
we are using the xtra cash for my daughters college fund.

I agree that all of the "Cheap Not Chic" ideas are just that -- not good no matter the savings, unless you want the Wal Mart of weddings.

Some people might say I had cold cut sandwiches at my wedding but it was very good meat -- smoked turkey, etc., and really nice cheese, with fresh baked buns, a special dressing the deli made for us, and other trimmings. It wasn't bologna and velveeta or anything. And my reception started around 2:30 p.m. so on an August afternoon in a private garden people wanted something light. No one complained...just saying....

Guest book -- if I was doing it today, I would have a photo booth and have guest b&w photos stuck in along with whatever notes they wanted to write in the margins.

Red -- actually that idea works for many colors. If you're having a fall wedding next year, you can get a lot of autumn themed, brown, gold, orange, red colored things in November on clearance. If you're having a winter wedding, you can shop after Christmas sales for not just red and green things but for wintry ivory, pearly, glittery things, too, and even black velvet. If you're having a spring wedding, you can get many pastel and floral things on sale in May, etc.

Invitations -- I know there are a lot of options these days and that desktop publishing can make many things look great, but the feel and look of an engraved invitation will never be replaced. If I was getting married now I would actually do hand calligraphy myself or have someone else do it -- if it was me it would be a simple clean font but still hand made and I think guests would feel special receiving it.

Minister -- wow -- they charge $500 and up??? I think we gave ours an honorarium of $50 that I assume has gone up to $100 or $150 by now. Not that the officiant is not a very important part, but really.

Wedding cake -- there are other ways to save on cake. Rather than going to a "wedding cake" bakery, try an ethnic one. We had a mexican "tres leches" (three milk) cake from a Mexican bakery -- very light and creamy with raspberry and lemon filling. They didn't have all the trendy shapes and colors but it was a quite elegant white cake that tasted amazing for about 1/3 what a wedding cake pastry baker would charge for a "real" wedding cake.

Also, our supermarket has displays of cakes from their bakery that look amazing and I am familiar with their cakes -- nothing over the top gourmet yet it's hard to mess up a marble cake with buttercream frosting. If it was me, I wouldn't spend thousands of dollars on cake ever, and I'm kind of a food snob.

I have been to an iPod wedding. I didn't miss the DJ. If it was me, I would get a band, and probably a local jazz combo rather than a "wedding" cover band.

Yeah...everyone should shop around for venues. My husband was a genius finding the private garden we had for our ceremony and reception and I would marry there again in a heartbeat.

Flowers. I went with traditional bouquets from a traditional florist for my wedding and probably spent too much. However, I saved big on centerpieces and decorations as I was married in a floral paradise that didn't need extra adornment.
