Do you know anyone who has actually worn a dress designated for a "bridesmaid" as her gown? I am getting married next summer and I think I want a light pink, tea length dress and nothing too fancy. I'm thinking about looking at bridesmaid dresses for myself as well since they seem to be cheaper and the styles are less traditional than wedding gowns. Have you or someone you've known went this route as well?

Answer
I've seen people wear bridesmaid dresses as wedding gowns. If you are looking for a simple gown then this is a good way to go - I don't see anything wrong with it at all. Just as long as you feel beautiful and comfortable.
Have you found any dresses that you like yet? Jim Hjelm makes some beautiful bridesmaid dresses - very elegant and nice styles; perfect for a wedding gown:

If you want something more simple and understated, go for the straight sheath. Long and fitted close to the body, it's almost like a column dress and usually comes in a variety of silks, like shantung or organza. The sheath flatters and elongates the body, making up for the lack of volume with a sexy sophistication.

If you prefer something more traditional, opt for an A-line silhouette over a big ballgown because it's a streamlined style that won't overwhelm. Another good rule of thumb is to look for a gown that has a natural waist, rather than a drop waist or an empire, which can throw your proportions out of whack.

If you instead want a dress that's more fitted and up-to-date, go for a trumpet/mermaid style. Fitted throughout the body and then opening into a bell-shaped bottom, this style elongates the body but still maintains a modest sex-appeal.

Keep in mind that a petite frame can play up pretty shoulders with a bateau neck and show off slender arms in a sleeveless scoop while a scoop or V-neck will make her seem taller. However, don't overdo it with details. Heavy beading can engulf you rather than enhance. A number of designers cut their dresses smaller to fit petite body types including Christos, Bianchi, Richard Glasgow, Jasmine and Amsale.
