I am designing my own wedding dress-for the most part the wedding is fairly traditional, but I want m dress to have color. It's a Christmas wedding and the colors are burgundy, cream, and gold (with touches of mauve). Anyway, the dress will most be cream-pretty simple on top, but the skirt will have the burgundy and gold laced in the ruffles at the bottom. It is 1850's Antebellum style. The outer layer will be cream, but you will be able to see the burgundy and gold. I know celebs where color, but I'm curious if it's considered "bad taste"?
Answer
Who's to say if it's bad? It's your wedding. Traditionally a first-time bride always wore white to signify virginity. A woman marrying for the 2nd time could not wear white.
This is from a wedding etiquette site:
This is your first wedding so you can wear what you like, most any style and color. However, your dress length is considered when you look at the formality of the wedding you are planning. A knee length dress would be appropriate only for a very informal affair and has nothing to do with age. most brides wear either tea length or floor length gowns.

Should a woman ware a wedding dress color symbolism purity if she's not a virgin?
Q. Since it is so rare for a virgin bride to marry she should wear a different color dress than brides who are not virgins.
Answer
White wedding dresses came into fashion after the wedding of Queen Victoria
I think that was in the 1840's
Some time in the 1900's Christian churches said white wedding dressed are for virgin
They were just trying to have people not to have sex
So I would assume, a non virgin would be doing the white dress base on Queen Victoria, a fashion statement; not the view that came many years later that white wedding dresses are for virgin
Today they have maturity wedding dresses in white
In some cultures, they do not wear white, they wear red or black or other colors
