what is the purpose of colors in the great gatsby? what is fitzgerald trying to show by using colors?

Answer
I'll get you started because it's not something that's obvious to everyone.Fitzgerald used colors to show emotion or irony in Gatsby. I'll get you started but these examples are just the tip of the iceberg. I did a 15 page paper on the colors of the Great Gatsby. Fitzgerald always used colors in his novel to symbolize emotion or irony. His novel Tender Is The Night is a perfect example. Here's a quote from Tender Is The Night.

âOn the pleasant shore of the French Riviera, about half way between Marseilles and the Italian border, stands a large, proud, rose-colored hotel. Deferential palms cool its flushed façade, and before it stretches a short dazzling beachâ¦. The hotel and its bright tan prayer rug of a beach were one. In the early morning the distant image of Cannes, the pink and cream of old fortifications, the purple Alp that bounded Italy, were cast across the water and lay quavering in the ripples and rings sent up by sea-plants through the clear shallows.â

These colors described represent the good times in the characters' relationships. Where there are light colors the lead female character , Nicole Diver, is happy and sane. The more the colors in the novel get darker, the more insane she gets until eventually they put her away.

Now in the Great Gatsby:

White represents purity, but a false purity. It's a color that people in the novel use to try to put on the mantle of purity and rightness. For example: Gatsby owned 6 pairs of white pants which symbolized how hard he was trying to make it look like he and his business were legitimate. The only place where it is used in it's true sense is when Daisy and Gatsby first meet he is in a white suit, symbolizing his honor, and it symbolizes to us that he is honorable and Tom is not.

Black and Red are only ever associated with death. Gatsby stands on a bright red rug, and Myrtle's lips are red.

Blue represents illusions or alternatives to reality. Most of Gatsbyâs house is described as blue. His, blue lawn, blue garden, and blue shirts, chauffeur in uniform of blue that invites Nick to his party, a blue dress sent to a woman who ripped hers at one of his parties, symbolize that everything about Gatsby is an illusion â a persona made up by him

Gold and yellow in The Great Gatsby represent money and riches, but that they lead to destruction. As Gatsbyâs yellow gold car runs down Myrtle we understand that Fitzgerald is trying to say gold caused the ash heaps of East Egg, which are the filthy result of the decadent lifestyle of the 1920's.

Gray represents blending in and disappearing and lifelessness. Wilson is often dirty, symbolizing his insignificance, as âwhite ashen dust veiled his dark suit and pale hairâ. East Egg is a gray barren wasteland where industrial waste is dumped. It is the place where Gatsbyâs dreams are burned to ashes.

Green represents Hope and the pursuit of prosperity and dreams that never come to fruition. The Green light at the end of Daisyâs dock represents hope to Gatsby that someday they will be together. In the end however it becomes âthe orgastic future that year by year recedes from usâ. Do not misjudge green in the novel for something bad or evil. Green is hope. Green allows the characters to dream. The Great Gatsby allows that though they may not come true, dreams can keep us alive inside. If Nick could, he would say that dreams allowed Gatsby to live in the world without Daisy.

In the novel Gold money has a scent - green paper money has none. Gold represents "old money" the money of wealthy society families, and green represents new money. Money made in industry.

Lavender, a light purple, represents a false sense of richness and royalty. Daisy wore a lavender hat and had a lavender bedroom.

Brown representing durability is found mostly in clothing

Silver represents delicate balance. The sky is like a âtriangle of silver scalesâ

If you go through the book searching for the colors you'll see how Fiztgerald uses color in Gatsby.

Is this a sign that my niece can turn gay?

Think abou

She's 11 and is the biggest tomboy. Will not wear a dress under any circumstances, she wears a baseball cap, jeans and when I took her back to school shopping the one item she liked was a shirt with a tie that looked WAY masculine. She also likes skulls and the colors red and black and not pink. Her sister is very girly. Is this just a phase or what does it mean?

Answer
If she is going to "turn gay" then that already happened ... at least 11 years ago.

So she likes a certain style ... that's what kids are like ...why does that bother you? My 9 year old nephew will only wear blue shirts.

As for your stereotypical assumption that all lesbians are masculine ... I bet my partner and I could out girly your other niece (and at least a half-dozen other girly girls) with our hands tied and our eyes closed.
