What color jewelry to go with a red dress?

Katie C

I'm not sure if gold or silver colored jewelry and/or shoes matches better with a red dress. It's a dark red, kind of in between the colors shown in these two photos.

Also, any makeup suggestions? I usually wear purple-pink eyeshadow colors, but I think these colors might look odd with a red dress. Help! Thank you! :)

Answer
If you want to try gold, wear really classy earrings and maybe a thin bracelet or ring, but no other jewelry, and nothing clunky (gold is best in modest amounts). Silver is fine, but with that shade of read, gold would look better. I wouldn't wear purple eyeshadow...subtle black mascara would be best.

What color jewelry would go best with dresses that are dark red & dark purple, gold, silver, or rhinestone?

This is regarding my bridesmaids at my wedding. My coordinator said I would need a dark gold so my pictures will not come out looking dull.

Answer
I am a jewelry designer of 23 years, and we help brides every day with questions just like this.

Gold is definitely the way to go: red is a warm color; purple is more warm (red) than cool (blue); and warm colors are complemented best by the warmth of yellow gold. Red and purple are both colors associated with royalty, and the richness of yellow metal is something one almost comes to expect to see with it. White metal will seem stark and overly bright with those colors; rhinestones will be a bit much with dresses that are already so striking.

With such bold dress colors, please be sure that no matter what jewelry you choose, that the pieces not be too large. It's your beautiful wedding, not a masquerade ball! Don't go too trendy, since you will be looking at these photos for years and years.

Since jewelry detail is so difficult to pick up in photos, except for close-ups, I would not make yourself crazy locating "dark gold" jewelry (I assume he/she is talking about antiqued gold costume jewelry) if you find a style in un-antiqued gold you like.
