I have heard that the whole thing about a white dress symbolizing virginity is just a myth; but today I went to a bridal shower, and we were playing a jeopardy, and one of the questions asked about this, and I thought the answer was the veil, because I also heard that in some cultures the veil does symbolize virginity, but now i'm confused??

Answer
Every culture has different symbolism for everything. The idea of a white dress representing purity and virginity is pretty much a thing of a past. Many "deflowered" brides are wearing white dresses to keep with the tradition of what a wedding "looks like." I myself am no longer a virgin and plan to wear a white dress at my wedding, because that is part of my dreams of being a bride. Some may be offended by this, but I really think that it is my choice. An entire colour should not be off-limits to being worn on a certain day just because I chose to embrace my sexuality with my partner before marriage. The assumption that the bride is a virgin does not exist in this day and age (in my culture in Ontario, Canada).

Is it inappropriate as a bride to wear red?

I just read the question about wearing red to a wedding, but what if you are the bride? My favorite color is red. I think it is symbolic of passion and love. But I have many people tell me that I shouldn't wear it, because it signifies lust and trashiness. I personally would (and probably will) wear red, but why such a taboo against bold colors at a wedding?

Answer
The answer to this question depends if it is related to a Western or Eastern culture. Prior to the Victorian era in England (as well as in Europe) a bride was married in any color except black (the color of mourning) or red (which was connected with prostitutes and âred districtsâ). The same reasons remain valid till nowadays. The white dress came to symbolize happiness, purity of heart, and the innocence of childhood. Later attribution suggested that the color white symbolized virginity; however, this symbolism is slowly fading in favor of simply having a traditional and popular white wedding, regardless of the couple's circumstances. However, it was originally the color blue that was connected to purity.
Many wedding dresses in China are colored red, the traditional color of good luck. In modern Chinese weddings, particularly in Western countries, the bride usually opts for the white Western dress or changes from a white gown to a red gown later in the day and sometimes a gold colored gown later on.
In northern parts of India the traditional color of women's wedding garments is red, a color symbolizing auspiciousness. Green, a color symbolizing fertility, is also commonly used. Nowadays many women opt not to wear red, and choose other colors.
