Why is it a tradition to wear a white dress for your wedding day if you are the bride?

Answer
It's only been for the past 50 years that white is considered the colour of bridal "purity" and only in part of the west, predominately the US. Women began wearing white dresses in the 1840's to imitate Queen Victoria's wedding dress. She wanted to showcase the many fine laces made in England by english lacemakers. This was to stop the flood of french and belgian laces that were putting the british lace industry out of business. Because all the laces were white a white dress made the best backdrop. Because Victoria was that era's big fashion trendsetter soon all women wanted to wear a white dress. A late as 1912 wedding dresses were still made in many colours other than white. It was after a couple more royal weddings in the early 20th century that white became the only color brides wanted. And it had nothing to do with purity and everything to do with fad and fashion and social status. It was about wealth, money and power, and a white wedding dress was the ultimate symbol of wealth and status.

If you lived in the antebellum south then sunny yellow would have been your preferred color to show bridal purity, and in the north pink -especially bright pink -was the preferred color. If you lived from 1000 to the 1500's then ultramarine blue was the color of bridal purity because it was the traditional color of The Virgin Mary's robes.

Even today it's only western brides who wear white and it's only in the US and parts of Canada where it's considered a symbol of "purity" Many other countries brides wear multi-colour embroidered dresses, red dresses, black dresses and some wear just a nice dress they feel looks good on them.

Does anyone know why does the bride where's a red dress for a Chinese wedding?

Miss Frase

I noticed that in China there seems to be two wedding cermony's one where the bride where's red and the other white, unless I'm mistaken and she wears white at either the blessing ceremony or the wedding reception, can anyone clear this up for me, I'm confused? The Chinese have a wonderful culture!

Answer
Red is the color of luck and is normally used for a traditional Chinese marriage. White is the symbol of death and should not be used in a traditional Chinese wedding. It is only used by brides who want a flair of western worlds. In a true traditional Chinese wedding, a woman will wear a wedding outfit that hides her face from the groom. It consists of a lot of robes and a strange head dress with a curtain of beads across the face. During the reception a woman will change into the phoenix outfit while the man will wear a dragon outfit (Normally this is just a dress [otherwise known as a cheong sam] that has embroidered pheonix on it) and will serve tea.
